This study aims to explore the effectiveness of art marketing from the perspective of the consumer’s experience. In particular, this study focuses on proposing potential art marketing methodologies that could be applied to the actual marketing practice. First, this study clarifies the types of art marketing by differentiating levels of consumer experience followed by an examination of related research studies. Most existing empirical research on art marketing focuses on the replication and incorporation of famous artworks into a product packaging or design. These replicative art marketing practices typically use fine art paintings despite the diverse genres that exist in contemporary arts. In today’s marketing practice, there has been significant growth in experiential marketing, with various cases of disruptive art marketing collaboration. However, academic research does not reflect these current trends. This study is therefore a vital contribution to both academic literature as well as the real-world marketing practice. This study classifies art marketing into 3 categories according to the consumer participation and engagement level: replicative art marketing, quasi-participatory / interactive art marketing, and full participatory / open source art marketing. For the full participatory / open source art marketing category, this study proposes a concept of “meaningful play” as a key way to induce consumer’s active participation and engagement. Meaningful play is a cognitive and emotional experience that is experienced through play, and is distinct from the fun which is universally experienced via certain stimuli. In other words, meaningful play is a unique personal experience that an individual has during the process of immersion into a play scenario via cognitive and emotional interaction. These meaningful experiences are not repetitive or ordinary, but rather continuous and memorable. The meaningful play concept draws from four forms of experience: Agency, Transformation, Empathy and Immersion/Flow. In other words, if a consumer experiences components of meaningful play through art marketing, they will be more engraved with brand awareness. Compared with typical replicative art marketing, a special personal experience plays a bigger role in building brand awareness. This means that even after a certain period of time has passed after the initial exposure to art marketing, a positive attitude towards the brand will remain when the consumer encounters the brand again. This positive inclination will continuously stick with the consumer, eventually leading to purchase intention towards the product. This study provides an extension of the initial research on art marketing beyond limited replicative methods and proposes applying meaningful play into art marketing from the viewpoint of customer experience. In addition, the study provides applicable marketing tools and insights for companies interested in customer experience management. In particular, in spite of the various genres of art that exist today, previous studies focused on the usage of fine art, especially in painting, which only validates the temporary attraction of customers at the time of purchase and has limitations in measuring the effectiveness of art marketing. Also, this study is meaningful for artists, as they use art marketing cases as a channel for their creative communication to further explore the interaction with the broader public and to increase brand awareness of the artists themselves.
