The purpose of this study is to investigate the monsters characters as objects of horror and subjects of subversion unsettle the subject/object dichotomy of sexuality and the 'girl' who is separated from the subject and the dichotomy as 'subjects in progress.' the ambiguity of a little girl as a horrific subject in The Ring (1998) by Nakata Hideo, most notably, complicates the notion of 'horror' in the contemporary context.
This thesis investigates the nature of the horror associated with the typage of the little girl in particular, the sexual ambiguity of which deviates from the gender dichotomy reinforced in the horror genre.
The ultimate purpose of this study is to illuminate how the little girl as a character type operates within the genre that actively exploits the ambivalent relation between displeasure and pleasure. In order to understand the psychological mechanism of profound anxiety that characterizes the 'subject in progress', I use Julia Kristeva's concept of 'abjection'.
In this movie I look at the Sadako's monocle and wonder what the dead victims are actually looking at. Distorted Sadako's monocle, which seems to be staring backwards in the world, is reminiscent of an image that has been inverted on the wall of the media ancestor camera obscura. The fantasy looks like more realitic than the fact and it distorts the fact. And the distorted fact suppresses/'oppresses' subjects through fantasy / imagination media. 'oppression' through film media created in a capitalist society where the patriarchal remnants - Separating subject and object, offender and victim - causes 'subjects in process' to experience 'anxiety' / 'abjection'. This paper focuses on the media of horror movies and studies the identity and genre of movies in the Chapter 2 to study the masses experiencing 'anxious' masses.
The film, The Ring (1998) by Nakata Hideo, is one of the horror films that reveal the mixed and ambiguous modern society. In the chapter 4, this paper examines how an immature mutant girl- the girl who has feminine monstrousness- can bring ongoing "anxiety" or fear between discomfort and pleasure to the masses of immature monsters in this confusing 21st century world.
