국문초록

이 논문은 20세기 초에 일본과 서양에서 유입된 서양 악기가 조선에 수용되는 과정을 악기 시장의 발전, 악기 교육의 제도화, 양악 음악회의 확산, 서양 악기 담론의 네 가지 차원으로 나누어 분석하고, 이를 통해 악기 문화에 대한 사회문화사적 관점의 구축과 식민지 시기 양악 문화의 재구성이라는 함의를 담아내고자 했다. 악기는 음악적 사상과 감정을 구현하는 장치일 뿐 아니라 음악 산업을 구성하는 주요 소비 상품 중 하나이며 현대 음악의 창시에 결정적인 역할을 한 미디어이다. 또한 19세기 이후에는 유럽과 미국을 중심으로 특정한 악기들이 대량 생산 되기 시작하였고 이 악기들은 전 세계로 전파되어 각 민족의 음악 문화에 크고 작은 영향력을 행사하였다. 서양음악의 침투로부터 자유로울 수 없었던 조선 역시도 19세기 말부터 서양 악기를 수입하였고 근대 양악을 받아들이기 시작하였다. 20세기 이전까지는 외국인 선교사들과 관리들에 의해 조금씩 유입되었던 서양 악기는 대한제국의 군악대 설치와 문호개방에 의하여 본격적으로 조선에 수입되기 시작하였고 1920년대 중·후반부터는 경성의 악기점들을 통해 일반인들에게까지 전파될 수 있었다. 외국의 발전된 음악문화를 전달하는 매체이자 기악 음악과 악기 시장이 형성될 수 있는 물적(기술적) 기반이 된 서양 악기들은 1920~30년대가 되면 음악교육의 제도화를 통해 그 정당성을 인정받기 시작했다. 또한 서양 악기가 등장하는 음악회의 등장은 양악 청중의 비약적인 증가를 가져왔으며 음악회를 일반화시키는데 결정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 신문물의 일종이었던 서양 악기는 많은 사람들의 호기심을 자극하였지만 그 중에서도 경제자본과 문화자본을 갖춘 지식인들 사이에서 인기가 있었고 그들을 음악 감상과 연주 활동이라는 새로운 문화영역으로 이끌었던 것이다. 그리고 신문, 잡지 등 언론매체를 통해 쏟아져 나오기 시작한 양악 담론들은 서양 악기와 그 연주자들에게 특별한 가치를 부여하였고 계몽사상과 식민지 근대성과 맞물려 서양 악기가 확산되는 데 결정적인 역할을 하였다. \r\n\r\n이처럼 서양 악기를 매개로 양악 음악인들이 증가하고 양악에 대한 관심도 커지면서, 조선의 음악계는 전통음악과 양악으로 양분되었고 서양 악기는 기보법, 교육제도, 악기 시장 등과 같은 체계적인 시스템을 기반으로 조선인들의 일상으로 뿌리내리기 시작했다. 즉 국악과 양악이라는 한국인들의 “이중음악성(bimusicality)”이 형성될 수 있는 토대가 이 때 만들어졌던 것이다. 악기는 다른 미디어들과 마찬가지로 일정한 기호체계, 상징형식, 기술 및 제도에 의해 뒷받침되며 음악적 사고와 느낌을 표현하기 위한 미디어로서 음악문화에서 차지하고 있는 비중이 매우 크다. 그리고 한 사회의 음악문화라는 것은 생산자, 수용자, 비평가, 미디어, 이를 둘러싼 사회 규범과 제도 등이 복잡하게 얽혀 있는 것이기 때문에 어느 한쪽만으로는 규정되기 힘들다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 서양 악기의 수용 과정을 통해, 근대 양악사의 다양한 모습들을 포착해내고자 했고 ‘식민지 근대’라는 특수한 상황 속에서 만들어진 국악과 양악의 이중 구조를, 서양 악기라는 미디어를 통해 녹여내고자 했다. 따라서 결론부분에서는 서양 악기의 수용이 의미하는 바에 대하여 한국인의 ‘이중 음악성’과 ‘문화자본’의 형성이라는 측면에서 서술하였고 이를 통해 악기의 사회문화사가 갖는 함의를 드러내고자 했다.

영문초록

The purpose of this paper is to trace back the introduction process of Western instrument in 20th century of korea. For analyzing the process, it is divided into four dimensions such as musical market, educational system, transmission media and discourse of musical instrument and showing a theoretical framework of ‘socio-cultural history of music instrument’ and reconstructing the Western music culture during the colonial period. The body of this article divided into four and the first chapter is about introduction of Western instruments in Korea and development of the music market and explaining how musical instruments trade in the early market.\r\nThe second chapter shows education of Western instrument and its competition between students to describe the institutionalize of Western music. Next chapter consists of Western music concerts held in Japanese colonial period to narrate formation of music audience. Generalization of Western music concerts showing the interplay between music audience so suggest that diffusion of Western music successfully by Western instruments. The last chapter is composed of discourses of Western instruments. This chapter associate with characteristics of discourses of instrument and reveal the way to represent it. A music instrument is a device which can express musical thoughts and feelings as well as the product that make up the music industry and a founder of modern music. Since the 19th century, some instruments produced under a mass production in Europe and the United States began to spread all over the world and have influenced on another countries' music. The Joseon Dynasty, Therefore began to import the Western instruments and embraced the Western music in the late 19th century and since 1920s the Western instruments diffused to public. Especially school education due to the start of the modernization and spread of musical instruments industry, the Western instruments obtained cultural significance and began to acquire symbolic meaning of modernization and ‘physical medium’ of Western music. This paper, through the describe of various social phenomena associate with music instruments, tries to reconstitute a historical trajectory of social usage and acception of musical instruments therefore arguing Western instruments were closely related to the formation of bimusicality' and 'cultural capital' of Korean and explaining the link between instruments and colonial modernity.
