Changes in the capitalism economic system and advancements in information technology and transportation turned cities into products manufactured for sales. Therefore the surfaces of modern cities became the fields of images in which capital, power, and desire of the public were condensed in the latter half of the 20th century. This study started with a recognition that such image environments were altering the nature of spatial attributes and practices of places. So it set out to analyze their content and formats and investigate how the images would be involved in spatial production and practice in street spaces. For those purposes, the study reviewed discussions about urban space and urbanites' spatial practice by Simmel, Benjamin, and Certeau and more concrete discussions about spatial production and places including the social space theory by Lefebvre-Harvey, the existentialist understanding of place by Relph, and the concept of cultural landscape by new cultural geography in order to explore analytical perspectives and methodological clues. Certeau saw that space was practiced by the appropriation and traces of usage by pedestrians. Therefore walking could be a tool with which to observe space. The attitudes of flȃneurs to explore urban images and discover internal traces were chosen as the strategy to capture the moment of spatial intervention of image. Therefore the investigator observed and analyzed images in the eyes of flȃneurs to categorize and interpret their spatial\r\nattributes. As for analysis, the investigator examined the mechanism and process of the media and images obtaining spatial reality. Referring to Mcluhan, Baudrillard, and Debord, media is understood as the vehicles to connect different spaces and times and, at the same time, a field of another reality produced by the needs of power. The study understood images as texts to produce a sense of space and meanings and then examined the material structure and practical nature of street where those images were practiced. Based on those understandings, the patterns of spatial practice where out-of-home media were working were schematized according to the model of spatial practice by Lefebvre-Harvey. The space around Gangnam Subway Station analyzed in the study is one of the busiest areas in Seoul and presents a concentration of the history of spatial development and characteristics of Seoul that went through historical interruptions since modernization. The space was recently appointed as one of the design streets in Seoul and has displayed media of new formats such as media poles. It is a place where printed images in actual size and moving images compete against one another for perception. The investigator was able to experience the place on foot, observe the image landscape, and closely examine the patterns of spatial intervention of street images. The analysis results helped to categorize the patterns of spatial practice of the place: The first pattern of spatial practice contained challenges at perceptive consistency and stability of space performed by the visual and perceptive attributes of images including extreme enlargement and mobility of images. The second pattern diversified the spatial layers of reality. The reality of space was augmented by contrasts between the generic place represented by images and material space, the perceptive reality of indexical images and reality achieved through the practice of created images, by the ubiquity of simulacre, and by the tactile reality of interactive media. The third pattern is place expansion which is done in two ways. First, the producer's strategies are mediated by images and expanded to the selected place. Secondly, a place is expanded to a private network or the entire online space through the media by the users. The latter is usually realized with the network-based media, which maximize the commercialization of space and other-oriented landscape and at the same time, create expectation to the productive consumption in the strategic landscape. In the fourth pattern, the street images form the contexts of places and become tools to reinforce fetishistic attributes. Images get to reflect the\r\ninstitutional perspectives of places by being deployed according to the examination and analysis of the places. So they tend to strengthen the attributes of places and commercialize them by exclusively possessing the places in a perceptive sense for a certain period of time. The fifth pattern of spatial practice involves changes to the practice pattern in material space by the physical possession of the media. Claiming apparently larger physical volumes and sizes, media poles caused obvious\r\nchanges to the pattern of appropriation of space and had conflicts with the illegal possession of space including street vendors. What should be noted in such a case is that they had to concede the space of representation, which produces spectacles, instead of specific practice of living. It is there that a question is raised as to the values urban design should pursue and mark with a side dot. The final analysis result of spatial practice of image is the digital art turning street into galleries. Digital art performed through media pole has the limitations in its installation background and political context. But it is important to understand that visuality, which is produced by not following the customs of commercial images, presents the possibility of urban image landscape being diversified Those analysis results show that the mobile attributes of modern urban space are facilitated by images and reinforce their non-place and placeness as the space of phantasmagorie. The phenomenon is the spatial reality of modern cities that change according to the flows of the times. It is not only the object of criticism, but also the field of the lives of modern people that requires close observations. The study tried to find ways to read the place reality of such urban spaces and read the media practice of actual spaces in such ways. One of the problems that emerged in the process is that the excessive commercialization of place by capital and power and its intervention in place narrow down the room that individuals can appropriate and use. Paradoxically, the digital network media have the possibility of serving as the tools with which to secure the public space that individuals can claim appropriation upon. In order for that to happen, operational plans for the public media should be explored which can guarantee various subjects participation in the media.
