This study looks into the "height discourse," a widespread cultural syndrome in Korean society since the 2000's, focusing on how short men and tall women engage in "height management." The purpose is to take a critical and academic approach at the height discourse, by identifying its components and disclosing people's personal experiences around height, a largely under-discovered research topic. By acknowledging that the height discourse is power at work in personal lives, as well as a cultural phenomenon on a social level, this study looked at not only macroscopical, sociocultural sides, but microscopical sides of it, represented through individual practice and subjectification. The study employed a wide range of research methods including literature and video data analysis, with a major focus on in-depth interviews with short men and tall women, the most frequently discussed subjects of height discourse. Study results are as followings. First, the study reveals the historical origin of height discourse in Korean society and the sociocultural background of its spread since the 2000's. Korean society's extraordinary obsession with height has to do with its historical context; during its rapid modernization and americanization, tall height came to represent civilization and wealth. The height discourse pursuing western beauty standards reflects Korea's ambivalent cultural identity; both admiration and complex toward the west. The "height growth industry," which expanded fast since the 2000's, sees one's body as a market to be capitalized on, under the name of "scientific management." It also labels "height minorities" as patients. Furthermore, the mass media promote irrational competition on height and height discrimination, by repeatedly presenting height stereotypes. Second, the research shows how one's desire for "ideal height" is created by social discourse, and how power works in the process. Desire for height is caused by the principles of "normality" and "hierarchy," which come from the height discourse. When one's height falls out of social norms, one's identity is marked as a physical minority and forced out of gender norms. During socialization, a hierarchy of physical strength is justified and strengthened as one of ability and dominance. Furthermore, the idea of heredity further motivates family politics based on height, Under the circumstances, one feels compelled to consciously manage height, in a society where height is considered essential social capital for relationship, marriage, and career. Third, the study discovers how one restructures one's self and daily life through height management, and the features of subjectivity acquired during the process. Today's height management enables more sophisticated daily self-surveillance. Height management is a holistic self-development process where one actively designs a life cycle. However, the height management brings about a conflict – a conflict between one's body, which is beyond one’s control, and one's self, which seeks to control. And such limitation leads one to the state of frustration or self-denial. Subjectivity is gendered in ways that men are urged to become more capable or wealthy, whereas women are encouraged to make themselves look better. After all, the fight on the individual level neuters the will to publicly address the issue, and helps solidify patriarchy on the social level. This paper tries cultural studies on "height growing fever" in Korea. The study holds significance in taking a sociological perspective on an under-studied physical trait, "height". By studying the height discourse, the research discovered how patriarchical functions are effectively reproduced and sustained. The uniform height standards of 180cm for men and 168cm for women are socially defined criteria, which require men to be more masculine and women to be more feminine. The standard heights of 180cm and 168cm were not imposed by people's instincts but are socially created ideals. And they all imply Korean society's lookism, hierarchism, and patriarchy. This paper questions the social atmosphere that uncritically engages in height discourse, and argues that gradual change is needed for height discrimination to be discussed in the public arena.
