This study investigates into the role of ideology in music, inquiring into the causes of Korean indie musicians’ active involvement in a number of political protests in Seoul in the late 2000s. Identifying the artists’ political participation with a popular culture phenomenon, this thesis examines where the politically active group of underground musicians lies between the fields of independent music, popular music and people’s music. In particular, this research focuses on how the musicians’ experience in political activism shaped the way they perceive and understand the relationship between their music, themselves and politics. In-depth interviews were conducted as a main method of study with 8 groups of independent musicians.\r\n There are four main findings as a result. First, with respect to the relation of independent artists to the field of other music scenes, it was discovered that the ‘politically active indie music scene’ is opposed to its popular music counterpart; Jarip Union, founded rising up at the commercialized state of underground music scene, is responsible for helping to put out new kinds of music. They pushed the boundaries of underground music that previously centered around commercial district in Hongik University area. In this context, political activism of these indie musicians can be also seen as a struggle against the forceful urban gentrification by the Korean government.\r\nSecondly, regarding of the relation of independent artists to the field of political movement, it showed that the number of protests which independent artists joined has been gradually increased due to their growing interests on class and regional issues like gentrification. After all, it is profound fact that most of the protests became more enjoyable and lively. This is due to the global trend of culture of protest along with music.\r\nThird, with respect to the self-awareness of independent artists of their own position in the music scenes, it was found that there are multuple contradictions between their words and deeds. For example, they refused to be named as “political participants” even though they actually participated in the several protests. This result refers to the constant alternation of independent artists’ political stance.\r\nLastly, it was discovered that the independent music itself reflects various indentity of independent artists with the lyrics which contains messages artists wanted to represent and the genre such as Punk, Folk, and Blues.\r\nAs a result, the politically active group of independent musicians can be divided into three groups by their stance. First group of musicians regard music as political acts, therefore they accept many political labellings which has been given by others. Second group did not have partucular opinion on any political issues but they accidentally participated in protests. Last group of musicians admit the application of music at the protests, but they refuse to political nature of music. This study has named the appearance of these groups of independent musicians as ‘Post- people’s music ’.\r\nThis study’s significance lies in the critical approach on independent musicians which had been treated as subculture. It aimed to deliver the voice of independent artists directly and restructure the culture of protest.
