o Inactivity of Ludologist approach in the area of Game Studies at current state is problematic, because it means our understanding of digital games is restricted which is one of the most prevalent play form in this 21st century. This research indicated the synchronic approach of existing ludology as the main reason that caused its stagnation in the academic area and suggested diachronic approach as alternative.\r\nErkki Huhtamo’s media archeological research which proposed coin-op amusement machine of the 19th century as the origin of today’s digital games has provided an important reference on this issue, because it showed digital game’s one important aspect which has been largely neglected to this day. Huhtamo’s work shows that digital game is not just another kinds of play form; it’s rather a very specific kind of play form which is originated from the 19th century’s coin-op amusement machine and therefore its own trait as play form needs to be differentiated from universal ones that overall play forms share. In this regard, this research suggested the notion of ‘Gamicity’ as digital game’s own trait as a play form to accentuate its unique aspect as a specific play form.\r\nThis ‘gamicity’ has been developing since the introduction of coin-op amusement machine of the 19th century. On the ground level, it was based on the industrialization and urbanization of the Western societies in that era. One of the following change was the popularization of coin-op industry such as vending machine, and, sooner or later, coin-op (or automatic) amusement machine showed up in the places like railroad stations. Due to its efficiency in money making, early gamicity that dominated coin-op amusement industry was ‘games of chance’ and it soon took the shape of automatic payout system. Despite its rapid growth, its relation to gambling caused social anxiety and soon the authority began to regulate the industry. This situation resulted in the rise of another gamicity which is ‘games of skill’ as counterpart. Since, coin-op amusement machine shuttled between these two gamicity and the history of pinball machine shows the exact situation. However the introduction of ‘flipper bumper’ in 1947 finally corrected its trajectory towards games of skill, which transformed pinball arcades of 1950s into teenagers’ subcultural places. It was this cultural aspect that the 1970’s video arcades inherited from the pinball arcades. On the other hand, decades before the emergence of video arcades, videogame itself was invented under the influence of playful hacker subculture which reappropriated serious usage of then latest technology such as computer. That means videogame in its earliest stage was not something commercial. It was rather a pure technological innovation or experiment by playful hackers. It was Nolan Bushnell who took this hackers’ playful invention and reappropriated it as a new coin-op amusement machine, and 70’s video arcades was the result. This shows that videogame has two different historical nodes, which are hackers’ playful culture that is based on publicity and coin-op amusement industry that Nolan Bushnell referred. Based on these historical nodes, videogame began to form its own gamicity. The biggest evolution in gamicity of videogame was definitely its visuality since it incorporates the signification on videogame screen into its play experience. What enabled story/narrative to be part of videogame was this aspect(visuality), and, via this, the gameplay experience could be expanding into the infinite imaginary world far beyond the mere physical interaction between human - machine.\r\nTaking this historical development of gamicity in consideration, this research proceeded to the historical inquiry of Korean electronic gaming. In its earliest stage,\r\nwhich was the era of industrialization and urbanization in the 1960s, the growth of popular entertainment industry itself had been strictly restricted due to the Developmentalist ideology that pervaded at that time. While the growth of coin-op amusement industry also restricted, gambling machines such as pachinko and slot machines appeared in both legal and illegal way and generated negative recognition on coin-op amusement machine overall regardless of its gamicity. The severe restriction on electronic videogames in Korea from the very beginning(mid 1970s) was due to this historical background. Coin-op amusement machines were regarded as gambling machine, regardless of its gamicity. However it was able to flourish under such regulation, since the youth gamers recognized and embraced its own unique gamicity such as games of skill and visuality. In the 1980s, gamer culture began to emerge among young students who interpellated as users of ‘educational PC’, and the visuality of videogames once again played a big role in the formation of Korean gamer culture. In the late 1980s, the issue of videogames’ violence and obscenity began to be raised by young gamers’ parents and authority, which could be extended to the issue of gamicity, however the fact that majority of videogames being Japanese turned the focus to the localization of videogame. This meant that industrial aspect became more important than cultural one in the scene of Korean gaming. The national policy of the early 1990s which stressed ‘culture industry’ reinforced such tendency and the issue of gamicity soon disappeared in related discourses. This situation eventually resulted in negative social recognition regarding videogames despite its highly complimented industrial achievement. Under this circumstance, it seemed the only counterpart who could recognize and discuss about gamicity was gamer community, and it indeed showed the possibility through internet game critic activity. However, since the community was largely based on illegal black market, it could not fully realize its possibility. After all, the issue of gamicity has been neglected or excluded all along, and what it resulted was the fixed binary opposition between ‘bad entertainment’ and ‘good business’ in the recognition of videogames in Korean society. In conclusion, this research is meaningful in that the historical development of gamicity showed how digital game as commercial amusement machine formed its own traits. Secondly, it is meaningful because inquiry on Korean gaming history based on gamicity provided insights on current issue of Korean gaming. Lastly, the notion of gamicity is useful in that it can be extended to the era of online gaming. However, it should be noted that this research had been relied on limited historical source and the notion of gamicity needs to be theoretically sophisticated.
