This study aims to analyze people who enjoy watching sports relay broadcasts. Korean professional baseball broadcasts have been one of the main genres of TV content since the national league was established in 1982. However, this content has not yet been fully discussed, especially when compared to content such as variety shows and dramas, among others. Although the form of viewing live broadcasts has significantly changed, most previous researchers have focused on production method and process of distributing content rather than concentrating on the audiences. With this background, this study was grounded on the fact that change in media technology is closely related to professional baseball broadcast, which focuses on the simultaneity of scenes, and that audiences’ experience while watching this content has changed from being collective to personal. More specifically, this study aims to observe the meaning of media sports consumption in the audience’s daily life under such changes in media circumstances. Especially, the purpose of this study is to explore how audience’s viewing experienced has influenced their perception of time and space. The research questions in this study are; ‘How does the audience of professional baseball broadcast use media while viewing broadcasts aired on daily basis?’, ‘What are the features of time experienced by the audience of professional baseball broadcast while viewing the broadcast?’ and ‘What are the features of space experienced by the audience of professional baseball broadcast while viewing the broadcast?’. The method for this research made use of interviews with 24 people in their twenties who use multiple media. The interviews were held in the form of in-depth interview and group interview. In the in-depth interviews, 8 people were interviewed firstly, and then another 8 people were interviewed. Additionally, in order to analyze gender differences, group interviews were conducted with 4 males and 4 females respectively. As a result, this study found that professional baseball audiences revealed their self-autonomy in the form of personalized narrative during their media consumption. Each member of the audience independently produces their own media repertory within their own environment, and this new media repertory is realized through audience members’ autonomous media use, in an attempt to acquire prompt updates in games currently being played. Additionally, the interpretative community that is mainly formed on-line not only consume broadcasted videos, but also share information that is not covered by the mainstream media via social network platforms. In other words, audiences are overcoming the restraints of the limited information that is regulated by time and space, and are creating new narratives by interpreting fragmented but live codes in various ways. Secondly, when watching professional baseball relay broadcast, audience’s time is standardized by the time of the actual game, rather than the time that the society sets as the norm. As it is crucial for them to be connected with the action simultaneously, they are constantly trying to overcome of being late, or lateness itself. However, when they realized that becomes difficult for them to follow the action in real time, they acknowledged the time difference and embody the time intermediated by the broadcast. In this sense, time is not the object to surmount, it is the fastest media other than the actual action itself. Thirdly, individual audiences are fragmented and dispersed around the city, and their sense of space is concentrated on ‘intermediated space’ which is filmed and edited by the broadcast camera. The moment they access the intermediated space, their cognition of the actual space where they are physically occupying weakens. This phenomenon mainly appears when audiences realize this space to be a ‘non-place’. Furthermore, the professional baseball relay broadcast as a virtual space is not only an alternative to the actual game site, but is also perceived as being a more attractive, more authentic space. In another words, indirect, mediated experience is showing superiority than direct experience in consuming professional baseball games. This mediated space is a virtual space that is separated from the actual place where the game is played, and the dominant position of mediated experience can also be detected in the baseball stadium, which is ‘the real’ site in mediation. The primary reason for people to consume the relay broadcast on site is to take a closer look on the game. However, taking a closer look, repetitively watching sports represented through the media has become the habit of the viewing experience. Although the relay broadcast aims to deliver the game’s sense of reality to the audience, the interviewers pointed out the fact that the reproduced relay broadcast that focuses on the ball is an experience that is nowhere to be found on the actual site. In conclusion, professional baseball relay broadcast are creating new viewing experience based on unregulated independent media use. Through analyzing the interviewers’ experience, this study came to find that users focus highly on mediated experience both in time and space wise. Immersed in professional baseball relay broadcast, the audiences were regarding mediated experience as something that is independent from the experience in the actual baseball game location.
