Social media on mobile has disrupted the existing flow of information transmission and the formation of social relations. This study set out to examine the phenomenon of affect mediated by mobile media by focusing on a specific case, the closed SNS (Social Network Service) "BLIND" for office workers. To this end, research examined the changes in the information transfer process practically, and the way social relations are shaped differently by mobile media. Furthermore, this research examined the interaction of human beings with mobile media to gain an understanding of today's digital media environment by analyzing the phenomenon of affect mediated by mobile media.
Before analyzing mobile media, it is important to understand them. This study discusses the changes in social context brought about by today's digital networks by checking the social relations formed by a media ecological vision and by identifying the media structures that influenced the information transmission process. In addition, the study considers the mobile social media culture of Korean office workers, who are the main users of "BLIND". In this research, the "affect" theory is introduced as a theoretical concept for analysis of the research object. The "affect" concept which has been approached theoretically in the past, is applied to a practical case analysis of mobile media. The reason the "affect" concept is relevant to the modern digital media environment is that it becomes a theoretical basis for reading the social boundaries through media. Through the "affect" theory, the complicated relations between technology, human beings, and emotions can be approached as moving forces. It is difficult to fully understand the phenomena caused by today's mobile media without the area of "affect". Above all, this research mainly seeks to examine the way "affect" can be interpreted in the digital media environment.
"BLIND" is an anonymous mobile social media subscription service that is only available to office workers, and has been provided since December 2013. Research on the closed SNS "BLIND" sheds light on ways to cope with the fatigue generated by the continuous connection to mobile networks something that existing open SNSs cannot show and the way to cope with the excessive infoglut. This study analyzed the way users could create new communication methods, and what connection meant to them in this space. Using a digital ethnography research method based on analytical methods, vast amounts of digital data could be processed. Furthermore, in depth interviews of "BLIND" users were conducted to minimize researcher's subjective interpretations.
The characteristics of communication mediated by the "BLIND" network show that clear boundaries have become blurred and staggered. Users construct a mobile media space in which phenomena such as on-line and off-line trust, personal space and public space, anonymous safety and disclosure of real names and affiliations are approached a complex and conflicting manner. Through the communication mediated by these spaces, users are tied together by creating an "affect" that is a new and transitional type of relation. At the same time, the users of "BLIND" were more deeply conveying the information produced by each individual under the protection shield provided by the technical space to multiple users in the "affect" area.
This research intends to understand the social change and cultural context created by technical tools. Here, technology is not simply confined to the role of a tool, but it takes on an existence comparable to a human being's. Technology is not simply regarded as an object, but is approached as an existence with an "affect" giving and receiving influences to and from human beings, society, and cultural contexts. This research understood the idea of a "networked affect" as the affecting connection between human beings and technology. Moreover, it found a generative and dynamic power from the interaction between human beings and technology and those among human beings. The concept of "networked affect" means the creation of social changes and collective relations mediated by technology.
This research is a significant in that it tried to recognize the power generated by an on-line community formed by a mobile device as an affect, and sought to identify a new form of user's solidarity through a specific case. Moreover, this research also has significance in that it recorded the effect of the closed social network service "BLIND" in 2017. The findings are expected to help understand the social relations mediated by this type of network, and to lay a basis for research on future mobile media.
