One of the most disturbing factors in digital games studies is the absence of its own language. And another disturbance follows is the dichotomy between Narratology and Ludology (as anti-narratology), two most distinctive movements in digital games studies, which makes digital games studies futile due to its ever-going discussion regarding the identity of digital game. Therefore the primary goal of this study was to break away from the dichotomy and present a fresh and new frame for understanding digital games. For the purpose, qualitative approach, rather than quantitative one, was appropriate as digital games are inseparable from ''playing'' which is a phenomenological action and therefore the experiences resulting from playing digital games became the main subjects. In this study I divided the experience of playing digital games into external dimension which activates potential game texts through physical action(i.e. pressing buttons) and internal dimension which is a process of receiving the activated texts, and then divided internal dimension again into form and contents. As my main concern was internal dimension of game playing experience, I executed the analysis on the form and contents of it. In the matter of form, V. Propp''s formulaic methodology of reducing hundreds of Russian folktales to several sequences of abstract events which used by David Myers for his semiotic study of computer games(1991) was selected. The results turned out that all the games in four genres(Action, Role-Playing, Adventure and Simulation) have their own patterns of play which were recursive regardless of winning and losing in certain sequences. Also these patterns could be found from micro-dimension to macro-dimension of game play which makes the game playing a pattern weaving action. The player gradually realize each pattern as he/she continually plays games and finds \r\nout that successful pattern weaving let him/her to smooth and coherent game play. To do so, player must learn diverse formulas within game (which are programmed) and therefore pattern weaving action, the form of internal dimension, motivates players to learn programmed formulas to keep playing games. Regarding the contents of internal dimension of game play, Myers'' semiotic approach to game play once again provides the base for understanding how players get concrete experiences during play. In his studies(2003a), Myers proposes two kinds of signification occurring during game playing: first-order signs, a signification of recognizing the signs(signifiers) and their relationships(signified) and second-order signs, a signification influenced by narrative setting(mainly backstories). As the evolution of computer graphics brought on second-order signification, the functions of narrative/backstories were what I focused on. First of all, games with linear narrative eventually represented as syntagmatic texts as Aristotelian arc of their narrative plaits the recursive and paradigmatic patterns. This is why playing digital games studies should not approach digital games at the stage of completed, since all the games with stories are closed texts with syntagmatic structure when ''cleared'' which makes no difference from reading or viewing. Secondly I analyzed four games belonged to each genre in regards of second-order signification mainly occurred by the intervene of backstory. In short, action games seemed to be affected by the second-order signification through broader contexts backstory provided. But it turned out that their main significations during playing were first-order ones as recognition of oppositional signs were what really mattered. In case of role-playing games, as the fact that their origin was typical 'Hero narration' and character setting and the relationships among them required contextual understanding based on backstory''s intervening, second-order signification was dominant. Second-order signification manifested adventure games since playing them without understanding backstory and narrative settings was almost impossible and lastly, playing strategic simulation game In Korea, we classify games like ''strategic simulation''. deconstructed all the narrative settings(i.e. second-order signs established by backstories) and left first-order signs only no matter how elaborate they are. This study is on a different standpoint from narratology which regarded a game player as a prosumer or a new kind of audience who shares authorship of texts. At the same time it is not holding its position on anti-narratologic ludology either, as functions of narrrative is important in its discussion regarding game play. As a matter of fact, this is what I pursue - a digital game study liberated from dichotomous narratology vs. ludology conflict. On the other hand, the discovery from actual analysis through the frame I presented, which opens a door to a new potential of digital game via conjunction between external and internal dimension of digital game playing experiences, was unexpected reward and I hope further studies to continue basing on it.
