Beginning at the end of the 20th century, perverse and psychopathological artworks have become extremely prevalent in the world of visual arts. In other words, a trend of using as mediums amputated, dissembled and oddly assembled body parts and morbid matters such as urine and feces, has surfaced in the visual art world in the name of post-body art. Having revealed itself without any degree of modesty, such trend is a cultural indication that; 1. the line between what is and is not socially acceptable is being annihilated, and 2. repressive institutional structures are being rapidly dismantled. In the world of visual arts, we call it the return of the repressed. In the world of psychoanalysis, the return of the repressed is called the ‘Uncanny (das Unheimliche)’. Psychoanalysis based on the concept of the uncanny provides a resourceful structure in which one can analyze the contemporary art whose fretful, perverse and psychopathic tendencies reveal themselves through the return of the Real. One cannot, however, rely entirely on this one concept to conduct a thorough analysis on the diverse subject of the contemporary visual art culture such as post-body art. It is therefore necessary to compliment it with the concept of uncanny as it is appropriated by the field of psychoanalysis and also as it is grafted into the contemporary art history. The following thesis will utilize these concepts jointly, in order to analyze the 20th century body art and especially the post-body art.The thesis will first deal with the origin of the uncanny and its manifestation through ones visual experiences. In addition, it will present an argument concerning the way the uncanny is manifested through the concept of body during modern and contemporary eras. It will then trace the context, structure and mechanism within the uncanny from the eyes of psychoanalysis in order to convert the concept of the uncanny from a philosophical and a literary notion to a psychoanalytical notion. There are three psychoanalytic elements necessary for the occurrence of the uncanny: repression, trauma and obsession. The context of the uncanny is based on Primal Fantasy, which is in turn closely connected to trauma. Finally, the uncanny effect can be summarized as the fear of castration and suicidal thoughts. By understanding the context of the uncanny within the subject of psychoanalysis and then grafting it to the psychoanalysis of the later generation and aesthetic theories, it can achieve its conceptual evolution as the aesthetics of the uncanny. To be more specific, the present thesis attempts to achieve a better understanding of the on of the uncanny by comparing it to the notions of the real and objet petit a of Lacan, abjection of Kristeva, base materialism and informe of Bataille, carnival of Bakhtin, grotesque of Russo, punctum of Barthes and aura of Benjamin. A new form of 'Aesthetics of the Uncanny' will be formulated based on such comparison, along with the concepts of ambivalence, otherness, subversion and defamiliarization. The three aesthetic principles or characteristics of the uncanny that are mentioned above, reveal themselves through defamiliarization. In other words, defamiliarization is one of the most important artistic strategies in basing ones art on the aesthetic notions of the uncanny of ambivalence, otherness and subversion. Such defamiliarization consists of many visual methodologies such as dissembling, assembling, exposing, putting into disorder, disguising and transgressing. This will be the basis of analyzing various aspects of post-body art.The presented thesis examines whether the psychoanalytical and the aesthetic concepts of the uncanny can be useful tools in analyzing the contemporary visual arts known as the return of the repressed, \r\nespecially the post-body art. A special focus will be placed on their roles in analyzing the four main elements of ambivalence, otherness, subversion and defamiliarization. In addition, it will examine whether the evolved concept of the uncanny and its aesthetics can produce a unique aesthetic concept that can enable more modernized conceptions applicable to visual art, literature, psychoanalysis, movie, philosophy, feminism, queer theory.
