Language is a mental process, which enables people to express their inner thoughts. Emergence of a new technology and media has changed the way of thinking for human being as well as its communication style. Given the fact that typography has made the distinction between orality and literacy, digital technology could be understood as a direct motive of creating the second orality after the literacy. That means language and technology is tightly intertwined with each other. In this study, I focus on how written language has transformed as the media developed. When considering those transitions, I critically accept the media-ecological perspective in order to avoid being overwhelmed by the technological determinism, which views relationship between the media and language as simply linear. I acknowledge media as an ecological environment, which surrounds language system, rather than a simple technology. In addition, I attempt to explore the relationship between human being and the use of written language. In order to examine the transition process of media and letters, characteristics of oral language -a pre-written language- should be deemed first. Orality has not disappeared during the literate culture. It rather motivated visualization of letters. Visualization of orality and letters is the main topic of this study, since it served as a direct reason for the transition of letter application. Thus, the purpose of this study is to explore changing process of visualization of letters in relation with emergence of a new technology.Digital technology, which makes the distinction between orality and literacy obscure and enables harmonization of languages, caused a huge transformation of communication style. Particularly in CMC or SMS environment, face-to-face communication effect can be expected transcending computer mediating artificial environment. For instance, people use emoticons to communicate their emotions or directly write spoken words to make their conversation more colloquial. These examples could be new attempts to express characteristics of narrative language through letters. Moving typography completed constant trial to express orality through letters since their development. Moving typography is a hybridity, which combines letters and visual images, unites time and space, and contains both oral and literate characteristics.Time, the fourth dimension, makes expression of movement possible. Time is a direct motivation, which helps moving typography show the emotion that oral language has. It is also a main attribute that distinguishes moving typography from traditional language. In this respect, this study views moving typography as a new type of language, which can be defined as the fourth language. ‘The fourth language’ is an organic language combining oral, literate, and visual languages as a whole. It could be understood as a new complementary language style rather than a replacement of the traditional language.Moving typography, the fourth language, has the following characteristics. First, it is an emotional visual language communicating non-verbal human emotions as well as objective information through letters. Second, it is a hybridity realizing multifacets of language, which correspond to the compound aesthetics of digital media. Third, it is a synaesthesia, which reconstructs human senses in order them to avoid being visually biased and to keep dynamic balance of senses. Lastly, it shows creative and subjective ways of expression. It is an organic language, which participates in a meaningful production by freely reconstructing and dissolving distinctive layers of language, media and senses. Therefore, the significance of this study is on providing theoretical and positivistic model of new technology development realizing moving typography as a general language that exists within a digital environment including CMC, SMS, and mobile device.
