In the Korean art world photography was traditionally considered to be a minor genre, denounced as "mechanical art without decency" or "cheap commercial art". However, since the 1990s, photography has been recognized as "the media that enhanced its artistic status most drastically". This thesis aims at investigating the legitimating process of photography during the 1990s from the perspective of the social production of art. This thesis applies analytical tools focusing on the formation of opportunity spaces, resource mobilization within the art field, and the framing of discourses, three of which are complemented by Baumann's theory about the process of artistic legitimation. This thesis also adopted Bourdieu's field theory to grasp the relational aspect of artistic spaces, considering that the shift of photography from amateur leisure activity to artistic activity was characterized by the conflicts and divisions among the field participants during a short period of time. Experiencing international events such as the Seoul Olympic in 1988, the visual culture of Korea became more and more 'image-oriented', and induced an increased emphasis on professional education about image. Furthermore, well-educated professionals emerged within the photographic field. In the late 1980's, photographers who had studied abroad returned to Korea and led the new photography movement - distinguishable from existing activities in amateur photography - into art institutions such as galleries and museums. In addition to the formation of this circle of artists, the 1990's period also saw the emergence of critics and magazines, who produced discourses on the aesthetics of, and the professional in photography. What these experts presented in the exhibitions, were forms of 'making photo' adopted from Western post-modernist photography. The concept of 'making photo' was in contrast to that of 'taking photo' based on realism, which had dominated the established photographic scene in Korea. These exhibitions, that is, the position making efforts by the 'making photo' gave rise to the theories and criticism culture of photography and spurred public discussions on photographic works made by 'artists', and not 'connoisseurs'. The major change that took place during the 1990s was that the emergence of artists such as Khu Bon-Chang and Bae Beung-Woo, who entered the artistic institutions and started accumulating a reputation as artists. While the institutionalization of photography as art, as well as the production of photography discourses were taking place within the photographic field, a change within the general artistic field outside the photographic field took place. As debates surrounding 'people's art' started to fade away in the late 1980s, the import of post-modernist discourses stimulated a general interests in media and installation art, which enabled 'mixed media' exhibitions with the collaboration by photographic field and the active introduction of photography discourses in art magazines. The opportunity space that allowed for photography's entry into artistic field was also created by Biennales and international art fairs, the major 'instances' within the artistic field, which were prompted by the opening of the art market in the late 1980's. As these instances paid attention to the photographic works by domestic artists, photographers became more and more conscious of the artistic field adjacent to the photographic field. The artistic field also started recognizing photography not simply as an accessory, but as a major media and object. Following the convergence of these two movements, the trend of 'the aesthetization of photography' emerged. This thesis was able to understand the mechanisms through which a consensus of the ideas of a specific genre, in this case, photography, is formulated, by looking at the formation and legitimization of the photographic art field. Post-modernist discourses played a critical role in the justification of photography's artistic quality. Post-modernist discourses stimulated the coalescences, as well as the deconstruction, of genres, and were furthermore concretized through the artistic processes of conflicts and struggles. Ultimately, these artistic processes, as both cause and effect of existing artistic field, challenged the identities and boundaries of the photographic field.
