This thesis attempts to look into Dutch filmmaker Johan Van der Kuken(JVdK)’s aesthetics. We can find two characteristics in JVdK’s films, which continue consistently throughout all his life. One is political questioning and the other is experimental film form. These two are two pillars that support JVdK’s film. But JVdK’s politics has close relation to his experimental film form. Therefore, to understand JVdK’s aesthetics, it is necessary to analyze his film form. For this reason this thesis focuses on the analysis of JVdK’s film form. And 8 of his films are used as cases for this analysis.\r\nTo analyze JVdK’s film form, first of all, we need to have a big picture of what he wants to do with his film. According to his essays and considering the perceptual characteristics of his image and sound, it seems that JVdK seeks to make film a pure perceptual media, even though it has traditionally been regarded as a narrative media. JVdK tries to removes representation, narrative, and signification from his films, and revive the pure sensation of image and sound. The pure sensations that we experience in JVdK’s films have tactility. He always put emphasis on ‘the perceptual surface’ which is the membrane for physical and direct encounter with the outside world. And he is also interested in ‘the perceptual asymmetry’ which connotes the liberation of senses. Liberated senses become tactile on the perceptual surface. \r\nThe thesis looks into each phase of film-making process. JVdK’s framing is not centralized for a narrative. His camera moves very freely as if to grope around in the dark. His groping camera arouses non-narrative suspense upon the screen and makes the audience feel and respond to the rhythm of the situation. \r\nJVdK fragments a shot and the relation between the shots. The purpose of His fragmentation is to liberate images and sounds from representation, narrative, and signification, and make them exist for themselves. Images and sounds as fragments become perceptual entities in JVdK’s film. For this reason JVdK’s fragmentation is, in a sense, a kind of ontological alchemy. JVdK fragments his film in several ways such as close-up, chaotic combination of short shots, jump-cut, black screen, and fragmentation of sound etc. \r\nJVdK calls his montage a collage. He arranges disparate images and sounds freely, by which he not only makes each image and sound sensuous autonomous object, but also discover a new relationship between them. The autonomous images and sounds in JVdK’s collage collide with each other, and create a synergy effect \r\nWe meet autonomous characters who are independent from auteur, story, and theme in JVdK’s film. There is no hierarchy of importance between participants in JVdK’s film. Each character has his or her own space-time in JVdK’s film. This is the reason why the composition of people in JVdK’s film can be called ‘polyphony’, which has to do with Bakhtin’s literary theory. \r\nAccording to above analysis, JVdK seeks to make his film the system of pure sensations which has strong tactility. JVdK’s tactile image corresponds to ‘haptic eyes’. JVdK’s haptic eyes deconstruct ocularcentrism conditioned by intelligence, and return to visual tactility. This could be interpreted as a kind of abandonment of light. Because light has been regarded as the symbol of intelligence since the Age of Enlightenment. For this reason we can call JVdK’s film aesthectics ‘Aesthetics of Blindness’.
