테크놀러지의 발달과 사회, 정치상황의 변화, 개인의 자기표현에 대한 욕구에 힘입어, 1990년대 중반 이후 한국의 다큐멘터리에서는 새로운 경향이 나타나기 시작했는데 그것은 카메라를 이제까지와는 다른, 제작자(감독) 자신의 내면세계로 끌어들였다는 점이다. 제작자는 자신의 일상과 관련해서 기억, 체험 등 많은 것을 공유하고 있는 가족, 가까운 친구 등의 대상을 통해 자신을 바라보고 자아를 탐구한다. 이를 우리는 ‘사적 다큐멘터리’라는 용어로 범주화할 수 있다. 사적 다큐멘터리의 수가 눈에 띄게 증가했음에도 불구하고 이의 실질적인 특성에 대한 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않은 실정이다. 본 연구는 이러한 현실에 주목하여 구체적으로 사적 다큐멘터리가 사회 속에서 어떻게 자리 잡고 모습을 갖춰나가고 있는지, 이에 대한 기존의 다큐멘터리 이론과의 접목이 가능한지를 살펴보고자 하였다. \r\n사적 다큐멘터리의 특성은 만드는 주체와 대상 상호간의 정체성이 복잡하고 미묘하게 얽혀 상호 침투하는 현상이 발생하고 이로 인하여 주체와 대상의 동일성, 서로를 비추는 거울과 같은 관계가 만들어진다. 그리고 물질적이든 정신적이든 자신을 찾아가는 행로가 자신의 역사를 되찾는 동시에 스스로 행하는 치료법이 되기도 한다. 또한 다큐멘터리가 만들어지는 과정에서 주체와 대상은 카메라를 사이에 두고 상호작용이 빈번히 이루어진다. 이러한 자기 반영성은 사적 다큐멘터리의 곳곳에서 흔히 발견하는 요소가 된다. \r\n사적 다큐멘터리에 대하여는 일찍이 1950, 60년대 미국의 아방가르드 실험영화의 선구자였던 요나스 미카스가 가족영화(home movie)형태를 통하여 그 단초와 기반을 제공한 바 있다. 그리하여 본 연구에서는 여러 다큐멘터리 작품 및 이론 중 요나스 미카스의 글과 사상을 통하여 사적 다큐멘터리의 이론적 토대를 찾아보고자 하였다. \r\n그리고 이러한 일련의 사적 다큐멘터리에 대한 이론을 설명할 사례분석으로서, 본 연구자가 제작한 <아름다운 여행>을 대상으로 실증적 검토를 시도해 보았다. 작품 <아름다운 여행>은 내용면에서 요나스 미카스의 일련의 일기영화 시리즈, 양식 면에서는 설명적 양식, 구조면에서는 다중화자에 의한 서사구조를 틀로 삼아서 제작되었으며, 본 연구자의 가족들 중 일부를 대상으로 하였기 때문에 사적 다큐멘터리의 특성이라 할 수 있는 주체와 대상의 동일성, 주관성, 자기반영성, 자전적 초상성, 즉흥성 등을 다양하게 포함하고 있다.
Technological development, the social and political changes, and the desire for self-expression had brought out a new trend in documentary during the late 1990''s. The film maker''s camera began to turn inward to the self, to the family, and to the people around his own daily life; the film maker investigates his(her) own self through his(her) family and close friends who share many memories and experiences in his(her) daily lives. The new trend is called the advent of autobiographical documentary. \r\nPeople are interested in “Who am I?" and subjectivity- that multi-layered construction of selfhood imagined, performed and assigned - was proposed as the current site of struggle that mattered most. The numbers of autobiographical work had increased dramatically but still, it is hard to find substantial studies on its characteristics. This thesis gives attention to how the autobiographical documentary is finding its place in the society and how it would progress in the future. \r\nThe main characteristic of autobiographical documentary is that the identities of the subject and the object of documentary are consubstantial. This creates a relationship that is self-portrait and impromptu. The road the subject takes to find himself, physically or mentally, is the road to his own history as well as to his self-remedy. While the documentary is being made, the interaction between the subject and the object of the documentary through the means of camera becomes a common occasion. Such self-reflectivity is the most typical factor in autobiographical documentary. \r\nThe contents of autobiographical documentary had been presented by Jonas Mekas who is one of the pioneers and key figures in the American film avantgarde. He concentrates on friends, home life, and nature. He pursues unending search for moments of beauty, celebration of life and friendships, and brief moments of happiness and beauty. He explores nothing extraordinary, nothing special, just things that we all experience as we go through our lives. \r\nThoughts and writings of Jonas Mekas are standing first in the theoretical background of my thesis. On the basis of his theory I tried to analyze which I produced. In contents, takes a form of Jonas Mekas'' film diaries while in mode, expository mode, and in structure, narrative by multiple narrators. My family members are the objects of my work, . So it includes typical characteristics of autobiographical documentary which I already mentioned above. \r\nAlready numerous autobiographical documentaries had been made and many more are still in the process of active production. None the less its territory has not been yet recognized. In conclusion, I expect my thesis will be the starting and building point of the many studies on the autobiographical documentary to come.
