In the capitalist society, food is more than the substance for survival; it has become a set of cultural codes. Foods are exposed more than before through auditory and visual media.\r\n This project started from a simple question: “We all experience taste with the palate. How is appetite created only by audiovisual stimulation?”Of our sensory organs, what allows us to respond to the external substance that we taste is the palate. Auditory and visual media are not sufficient to convey touch. Advertisers, however, must rely on auditory and visual means to communicate taste without directly stimulating the potential consumer's palate. Diverse visual methods have been developed to fulfill this task; advertisement attracts consumers by mobilizing all sorts of techniques. These audiovisual techniques that stimulate our taste are known as ‘sizzle’ techniques. The general principle of sizzle is to maximize desire to consume food by appealing to the eyes or ears, organs other than the palate.\r\n This study seeks to identify the principle and the applications of various sizzle techniques and to propose ways to use them in creative moving images work other than advertisements. It employs theories of semiotics, synesthesia, and associationism to understand how sizzle techniques work. 《Festin de mariage》, my own video piece, is the final outcome that utilizes sizzle techniques to communicate the emotions of the protagonist.
