This dissertation is an analysis on how Alfred Hitchcock composes a closed space in his film Rope and represents the reality. Rope is a film considered as a filmic experiment by many disputants and by Hitchcock himself. It's because of its composition of 'reality-like' temporal logic, that is, the sequence of events. In other words, no visible montage appears in this film. Hitchcock commented on his own Rope "It was an absurd idea. I broke my own theory on the importance of editing and montage in that film." The experiment is, however, a valuable exploration on the cinematic language and particularly in terms of its relation to reality(actuality).\r\nIn this study, a series of results that Hitchcock wants to obtain through the experiment of Rope will be revealed one by one. The first chapter deals with his closed space which has no exit in the story. Closed space that can lead to psychological constriction persistently appears in Hitchcock's films. He gathers many people in a confined space and then isolates one of them in order to deliver the character's fear to the audience. The whole atmosphere of Rope, Lifeboat, and Rear Window is set up as a closed space. Subsequent analysis of Lifeboat and Rear Window derives from the study of the difference and repetition(consistency) in the closed space in Rope for the understanding of a trace of Hitchcock's cinematic world.\r\nIn second chapter, how Hitchcock has composed the closed space in Rope is analyzed. He eminently weaves the closed space in this film in pursuit of functioning cinematic form and narrative structure organically. What Hitchcock aims in this film is the fear in the trivial round of daily life unexpected due to its so slight way of penetration, rather than a dramatic fear in this film. Hitchcock needs to bring 'an image of reality' into relief to deliver fully what he aims to the audience. For that reason, he puts aside montage and weaves his films in an 'one scene-one shot' approach as a way of accepting the realistic space and temporal logic. Therefore, in Rope, montage is applied not as an editing concept but as a visual construction within the frame. Continuity of camera movement in Rope enables the time of the narrative and experiences of the audience to be occurred at the same time.\r\nThird chapter deals with the relations of the reality and cinema that could be arisen in Rope in which 'an image of reality' is eminent. The concept of verisimilitude is adopted and analyzed as a methodology of the study for Rope which could be concluded as a debate on formative realism. Verisimilitude means 'plausibility', a representation of art into reality, and transfers to the audience as mechanism of art. Applying Tzvetan Todorov's concept of 'verisimilitude'-which mainly cited to literary criticism as a narrative theory-to Rope, I analyze verisimilitude of the film. Hitchcock hnew that in Rope the audience won't realize the reality of it, if the scenes were taken without manipulation. That's why he tries to strengthen the verisimilitude, a communication method based on the mutual trust with the audience to increase reality effect of Rope. Based on it, he reveals the basic conditions of human nature and origianl sin, rendering the boundaries between the good and evil ambiguous as a critical gesture.
