This thesis examines the correlation between the exhibition space and medium, thereby attempting a reflective thinking on contemporary art. While art has diversified since the dawn of modernism, the gallery space as a system of exhibition still needs critical investigation. Granting that the space of exhibition is comprised of heterogenous elements, psychological, physical, and institutional, this study discusses how space have been and shall be the object of modernist self-critique through three issues. Not only does this paper shed light on the significance of space in contemporary thinking in art but also proposes a critical perspective on the conditions of art-making via Rosalind Krauss’s account of modernism.\r\n This paper uses 'dispositif' of Michel Foucault as the primary theoretical framework in order to examine the complicated aspects of art. Foucault's notion of 'dispositif' is not distinct from that of 'appareil', but in this study, I uses these terms depending on the context.\r\n First, I look into the notion of ‘dispositif’ in a broad perspective, which according to Michel Foucault includes non-materialistic and invisible elements in the operation of art and politics, in order to explore how art is inseparable from the dominant aesthetic norms in terms of the means of exhibition. In doing so, I discuss the strategies by certain artists of the 1960‘s and the 1970’s who not only incorporated space in their works but also critically responded to such attempts. \r\n Secondly, I revisit the notion of the “medium” as an efficient means of what Clement Greenberg called “self-critique.” Framing the prevalent strategies of the 1990’s as “post-medium,” Rosalind Krauss advocates re-articulation(or re-invention) of the Modernist notion of the “medium” as the basis to renew the avant-garde strategy to resist capitalism. In alignment with her argument, I rethink the modernist scrutiny of the “basic apparatus” or what French theorists described as “l’appareil de base” in order to bring to light the need to reevaluate the medium in the broadened context. \r\n Combining the analyses on the gallery space and discussion on the medium, I ultimately propose a possible perspective from which the address of the space gains more magnitude contemporary art. As did Krauss, Slavoj Žižek contends the ubiquity of the system, thereby getting rid of the delusion of freedom of the system. and conceiving a ‘system of freedom’. This argument reminds us of the fact that the movements of anti-art has been incorporated into the dominant order in art. A further consideration on the material conditions of the system can lead to a more comprehensive critique of the dilemma in contemporary art. For this, I analyze Romeo Castellucci Paradiso(2008). \r\n Art exists as an integral part of the operation of conventional order. This study neither denies this fact nor settles on a pessimistic view on it. Rather, it argues for the necessity not only to acknowledge the root of the modernist self-critique but also to reinvent and expand the critical attitudes towards the material, basic conditions of art exhibition in order for a more informed projection of possibilities upon the future. In integrating the discussions of the exhibition space and medium, this paper attempts at the construction of a critical engagement of the dispositive of art through a materialistic view.
