Chris Marker has been continuously active in creating works that cross the borders of media and genre, including photography, film, video installation, CD-ROM, computer game, and etc. However, for his last ‘off-line’ project, he chooses to adopt photography as his expressive tool, a medium that is for him most familiar and old above all others. What is remarkable in is that the photography he presented in this exhibition was no ‘bona fide’ photos taken with a camera. He extracted still cuts from his previous film, transformed them with digital devices, and completed them as forms of photography. This thesis analyzes the reason Marker returned to photography, an ‘old’ medium, and the significance of digital image processing he utilizes to create photography. As the narration tells in (1982), Marker’s practice of “pursuing a life-long study on memory,” is extended to his photography in . To investigate this idea, this paper examines the concept of ‘memory’ mentioned by Marker. In his production note for the CD-ROM work (1997), Marker directly quotes a phrase from Marcel Proust’s [In Search of Lost Time]. The characteristics of ‘involuntary memory’, a term suggested by Proust as the key to finding the ‘essence’, align with the state Marker intends to induce the audience through his works. While voluntary memory reconstructs the past based on the present, involuntary memory preserves the past as it is and enables it to coexist with the present. Borrowing the words of Bergson, Deleuze explains this state as a state of ‘virtuality(le virtuel)’, which is also what Marker attempts to realize through repetition and transformation of images in his works. Marker has been raising a critical awareness of the danger of fiction inherent in the photographic video, a replication of the world-object. In documentaries like (1977) and (1992), he warns of the delusion of the representative image that can lead to oblivion and distortion of the real. A past reconstructed by duplicate images representing the object as it is, can easily become subordinate to the ‘present’. In order to reflect on the essence of history, one needs to sense the present together with the ‘pure past’, a past that exists independently rather than as a reconstruction of the ‘present(or someone from the present)’. In , Marker creates a certain ‘Zone’ in order to show that image as a representation can differently function, depending on the intention of the user. The methodology he practices in these ‘zones’, in other words, transforming ‘past images’ and producing fictional images revealing such illusion, is extended to his photography work in “Staring Back”. Photography has been perceived as a medium containing an inherent paradox of time, whereby the past and present coexist. However, the recent flood of photos deprives us of the opportunity to face the existential, ontological perplexity intrinsic to photography. In this given situation, Marker chooses to utilize photography as a medium that urges one to deliberate and dedicate time. He transforms the frames he captured from his film with graphic tools like Photoshop, then prints them, leaving evident traces of such modification. He then names photos made through this methodology as ‘Superliminal’. Marker chooses to direct the new working environment called the ‘digital’ rather than hiding it, and questions the ontology of photography, characterized by its indexicality and evidentiality. Owing to Marker’s original working method oscillating between various layers of time and events, between analog and digital, his Superliminal in [Staring Back] resonates with Deleuze’s concept of ‘image-crystal’. ‘virtuality’, a trait of the image-crystal structure, has an equivalent effect as the ‘involuntary memory’, which implies that the Superliminal is again Marker’s reference to memory. What is essential in Marker’s work is not only the form of image but contemplation on the physical fundament of film, computer, and photography, and on its relationship with time, arising when overlapped with different layers of events and works. For Marker, what defines the specificity of a medium is not its physical attribute, but rather, the technology and order that enables it to function. By closely examining the technical functionality of a medium, Marker ‘reinvents the medium’ in a way that the critical awareness of time, memory, and history echoes to the fullest within the given technical nature of the selected medium. While the wave of images that diminish the social and political memory increasingly expands?images sourced by the mass media and consumerist society?Marker adopts the digital dispositif even more actively. Marker’s works that experiment the unexplored potential of a medium and intentionally create nonlinear, informational image, are aesthetic, as well as political practices.
