This study is based on the question of how the phenomenon of drama remakes and its features could be explained through the lens of globalization. Having gained popularity in Korea since 2006, drama remakes premise the encounter of different cultures. They go through a process of cultural translation as works that are politically characteristic of transculturation.\r\n Previous researches concerning Korean drama remakes tend to employ concepts of cultural proximity and glocalization. The two concepts not only account for an appropriate explanation of culture implant and localization but also discard the traditional Orientalist perspective in analyzing cultural phenomena in the age of globalization. And yet, cultural proximity and glocalization fall short of fully explaining the current phenomenon of drama remakes in Korea, because they regard culture as having an essential property. This paper therefore uses ‘hybridity’ as the primary theoretical framework in order to examine the complicated dynamics between the global and local.\r\n Homi Bhabha’s notion of Hybridity offers a distinct perspective upon the boundaries that reveal cultural differences. Nevertheless, his argument is too abstract to be put to use due to his dismissal of social and economic contexts. In order to strengthen the theoretical framework, I bring in Néstor García Canclini’s study on hybrid cultures through which he views the process of modernization in Latin America. Since Canclini’s notion of hybridization highlights the dimension of practice, it renders Bhabha’s abstract notion of hybridity more concrete and applicable.\r\n After having established the theoretical framework with Canclini and Bhabha’s notion of hybridity, this study performs a textual analysis and an audience’s discourses analysis regarding the KBS drama, Queen of Office. First, I examine the hybrid constituents that appear in the signification process through an internal analysis of the characters and an external analysis of the context. In other words, I trace elements of the original text that are translatable to the remake text and analyze its relationship to the social contexts in Korea. Then, I examine the audience’s reception and their subsequent behavioral practices. This analyzes how the audience is receiving the hybrid text and how their subsequent practices relate to its hybridity.\r\n The results of textual analysis show that the remake version of Queen of Office differentiates itself from the original text by inventing new characters and transforming original characters in order to highlight the contrasting social, educational, and economic statuses of the protagonist and antagonist. Actively embracing Korean societal discourses such as those of ‘88,000-won generation’ and ‘dream ideology,’ the remake version goes through a cultural translation.\r\n\r\n As for the audience’s discourses, they reflect the diverse responses of the viewers who accept the hybrid result of cultural translation. More specifically, the audience tends to consider remake drama as a new genre. Furthermore, some behavioral responses in part of the audience display a movement of Decentering.\r\n This paper contemplates the theoretical framework and research methods that are necessary in grasping the varied nuances of transculturation represented by the remake genre. It uses the theory of hybridity by Bhabha who is noted for his study of Postcolonialism and the case study of hybrid culture by Canclini. Employing the notion of hybridity in studying the phenomenon of remake drama does not lead to a simple analogy of the differences between the original and remake versions of Queen of Office to those between Japanese and Korean cultures. Instead, this paper attempts to trace the translatable elements that form the core of Walter Benjamin and Bhabha’s studies. It also attempts to expose the various facets of hybrid characteristics by capturing the decentered characteristics of audience’s discourses.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nKeywords: television drama, remake, Queen of Office, Postcolonialism, Hybridity, Hybridize, Hybrid popular culture, Homi K.
