This paper explores the meaning of house and place-making process of the female youth migrants who experience daily life with new homes after moving to Seoul. Considering the history, it is evident that subjects who were able to own homes were mostly men and gender-biased. In addition, a social system of marriage was the only way for women to gain independence from their family. This meant women’s subjectivity was a significant factor in the process of parting away from her family, and disabled women’s achieving complete sense of independence. Whereas, women’s becoming the home-owners by themselves is fundamentally different from that of men and produces differentiated meanings. Moving into Seoul, dwelling in unfamiliar spaces, the young females generate knowledge of independence with recurring removals. Thus, the place-ness of their homes exists as a way of competing, subordinating, and resisting against established patriarchal system. \r\nThis research is conducted with in-depth interviews, with supplementing autobiographies and visual methods. Such research methodologies enabled this study to discover various meanings that are not standardized and unrevealed in the process of migration, settlement, and formation of placeness of female youth migrants.\r\nBy answering such questions in relation to the mobility and the place-ness occurring throughout emigration, settling, and placeness, this paper found the following results. Before migration, the female youths feel their need of escape and desire for self-improvement and this lead them to move out from their previous homes. They want to get away from their conservative and patriarchal families, and imagine Seoul, the metropolis, as a place of experimenting their subjectivities and developing themselves. A number of mechanisms were practiced, including both traditional and digital media, supported women to imagine spaces and lead them to move out. \r\nFor the female youths, migration takes place within two scales; first is moving from habitual residences to new address, and second is leaving from communal homes with their families and transferring to individual homes. Such experiences make them feel immature and give them anxieties and nervousness. Undoubtedly, this leads them to continue to exert emotional and affective efforts to rearrange and get accustomed to the new environment.\r\nThe female youth migrants consider homes as floating place that provides freedom and liberation. On the other hand, they also recognize homes as places of negative sentiments with isolation, and immanent paternalistic values. Such duplicity makes them recognize placeness as overlapping with previous placeness or as repeating discontinuities. This recurrence refers to fluidity, not settlement which does not fit into the sense of places from existing homes. From this respect, the female youth migrants tend to subjectively create places to resolve repetitive anxieties, and their efforts are exemplified by formulating ‘pseudo-families’, or media performativity with constructing sense of places via media.\r\nOn the contrary, to old residences, which provided them place-ness stabilized to the patriarchal logics, place-ness of new homes has fluid characteristics depending on subjects’ daily tasks and practices, thereby allows the females to become ‘subjects’. As research participants dictated, the procedure of constructing place-ness shows that home is not a physical space that is confined to singular place-ness. Instead, home contains varieties of placenesses based on each subjects, and they exists in the emotional dimension, which cannot be standardized or unified. \r\nIn conclusion, the female youth migrants create their own places throughout various experiences of formulating placeness of their migrated homes. While this involvement with place blurs, maintains, and even floats on the conventional gender system and gender boundaries, it is still crucial since this process creates the subjective placeness for the female youth migrants throughout the process of place-making and daily behaviors. Considering homes provide not warm feelings of familiarity with stability but all sensation to them, the female youths migrants constantly reconstruct place-ness of homes, which remain as fragments.
