There are numerous types of music that are not well-known to the general population. The fact that such minor genres of music are created, played and consumed shows that various cultural resources play certain roles for continuance of music. The objective of this paper is to explore the change in status that noise music had gone through within and outside the field of music since its creation in 1990s, and to discover the external environment and structural causations that influenced such transition. This paper tried to adopt the perspective of Bourdieu’s cultural sociology in conducting research. This paper also referenced Baumann’s frame to create an objective when analyzing the relations outside of the field of music to examine the legitimation process. In the advent of noise music in Korea during the mid 1990s, its musical values were not recognized, and noise music was pushed aside. Nevertheless its production and consumption has been steady for the last 20 years. Taking a macroscopic view in terms of interpreting the whole musical field, current status of noise music is very feeble. Noise musicians and its listeners do not particularly distinguish noise music from pop music, but except for such epistemic interpretation, the data to deduce the objective status of noise music from a broad view is next to non-existent. Noise scene’s continuance was possible despite such circumstances because the internal efforts to maintain it have eventually influenced strengthening the scene’s autonomy and capital symbolique. Although a smaller section was separated out of the noise scene once, the musicians were able to cooperate unceasingly without major disputes on the musical form. Since the 2000s, as increased international awareness in music and the cultural meanings of noise shed lights upon the noise music, there came an opportunity for the it to build a bridge between the art field. Now noise music is recognized as a new artistic form that we can encounter in art museums and galleries. In the backdrop of such shift are the influx of post-modernism in the 1990s and the history of media art that thrived in its influence. At that time, as the audio culture gathered attention in the western hemisphere, it started to influence the art field. Thus, the cases in which the art pieces manifested by sound were exhibited in the art museums started to appear. The status of noise music escalated in a relatively short period of time with the change in external circumstances in which it was included as the ‘Sound Art’ which freshly emerged in the art field. As sound exhibition and workshop programs were designed, noise musicians grew to participate in the events more. Thanks to such participation, musicians could embed themselves as symbolic beings in the sound field. However, sound art embraced without discourse showed its limits in exhibition grammar because it led to the identification of noise musicians as ‘sound artists’. Some musicians tried to differentiate themselves from such perception, and eventually the efforts bore fruit in that the musicians who worked together as convoys were able to strengthen the noise scene’s autonomy and symbolic logic eventually. We can point out the absence of discourse as the major cause for such misunderstanding. Except for the data that musicians themselves produced and accumulated, the language to convey information on noise music for the public did not develop up to that point. The fact that criticism on noise music were nonexistent for the last twenty years shows it. Through this analysis, this paper could examine the situations in which artistic legitimation cannot set in place as well as the institutional reason for it. Also, this paper witnessed recent phenomenon where noise music―up until now its values were not recognized in musical field―is gathering attention in the musical field as its status was heightened in the art field.
