This paper seeks to examine changes in the structure of Korea’s field of artistic production and the art practice of agents within the field. The primary focus is the changes in the art practice of emerging artists who joined the field of artistic production in Korea after 2008, a time when neoliberalism began to take hold, and the strategies adopted by such artists. For this purpose, this paper traces changes in the structure of the field of artistic production from its initial establishment to its current status, and the varying strategies of agents during that period. The theory of the field of cultural production by P. Bourdieu, a French sociologist of art, served as the main theoretical basis of discussions. Among the many aspects of Bourdieu’s theory, this paper concentrates on the dynamic nature of the field of artistic production in triggering a symbolic struggle among agents within the field, and how all fields possess relative autonomy despite such dynamism due to the structural dependence that makes them susceptible to political and economic influences. In studying changes leading to today’s field of artistic production and the strategic practice of agents, the various discussions surrounding the artistic labor market in the framework of economics of the arts and the potential of artistic labor as immaterial labor were used to supplement Bourdieu’s theory of the field of artistic production.
The basic approach of this paper to the artistic movements that took place since the establishment of modern art in Korea is to regard them as structural changes in the social context, and not as changes in trends and tendencies. The largest paradigm shift is considered the transition to contemporary art since the 1990s. The point at which the symbolic struggle of agents in the field diversified and institutional expansion grew active, rather than contemporary art itself, was used as a reference for specific trends in art. As a key issue of the development of Korea’s modern art in the 1950s to 1980s, prior to the transition to contemporary art, this study looked at the influence of state power on the symbolic struggle, an indicator of modernist art’s rise to power. Another focus was Minjung art, which challenged the dominant status that modernist art enjoyed before the 1980s, and its place in the field. In particular, this study addressed the performance of Minjung art in post-modernist discussions sparked by the emergence of new-generation art after the mid-1980s, and the reevaluation and positioning of the movement as contemporary art leading to post-Minjung art or art as social criticism.
This study examined structural changes of the contemporary art market in the 1990s to 2000s in terms of the role of individual artists against the backdrop of institutional expansion. First, it explored the spreading of international art biennales under the influence of state policies, and the status of the art market shaped by the economic capital. Next, this study analyzed how the field of artistic production was influenced by new alternative spaces and creative studios, introduced in the second half of the 1990s as a system promoting the participation of emerging artists. In addition, it tracked the activities of agents within the field and how they settled into their positions through a cross-check of several major policies.
Considering the above, does the structure of today’s field of artistic production belong to the same contemporary age as that of the 1990s to 2000s? The structural changes exhibited across society following the 2008 financial crisis seem to have occurred in the field of artistic production as well. The field grew more polarized with the weakening of the existing system, and as a result, the most important issue among artists was their survival. In order to make a living, artists began to form small groups and engaged in collaborative projects, which is the setting behind this experimental study?the art practice of agents of new spaces that grew widespread in 2014-2015. The 880-thousand-won generation utilized their experiences for their art practice as a kind of habitus, and individual artists engaged in art practice for survival, empowered with mobility and under varying conditions as self-fulfilling multi-players. This paper closely reviews the diverse forms of art practice based on the lives and experiences of agents, and inquires into their position and significance in the field of artistic production in Korea today.
The social significance of this study lies in the fact that the lives and experiences of the agents of independent production spaces not only reflect the current field of artistic production but also that of the agents of other fields of cultural production at large in our society. By examining the dialectic relationship between the field of artistic production and its agents, and historical developments leading to the modern-day field, this study contributes to identifying the social implications and roles of art today.
