The social urge to define and study women as cultural subjects is becoming the stimulus to study contexts surrounding women. This study started from the question regarding how Korean women are recognized in the field of sports, especially in Korean Baseball Organization(KBO) League, and how they could exist as a cultural subject. Professional baseball is one of the most popular sports in Korea, with the record of gathering 800 million audiences for the first time in Korea. Amidst this popular cultural sphere, this study focused on women who have shown rapid growth in number and attempted meaningful analysis regarding their presence. Traditionally, sports were considered as male-oriented field of culture. Such male-oriented conventions and dominant values did not provide suitable environment to study women and their complex performances. Moreover, with particular political and social context, women were sometimes not regarded as proper objects of study. Recognizing that previous studies have studied women in sports culture in a fragmented and biased way, this study attempted to describe discourses on women and their representation from the complex point of view that are intricately related to them. Limitations of previous studies can be described in to three ways: first, they analyzed sports fandom and their performativity based on the standard of dominant conventions, second, they tended to minimize women's performance from male-dominant perspective, and third, they did not seek possible ways to redefine traditional male-oriented norms. To overcome the limitations of previous studies, this article attempted to actively analyze and make meaning out of women's performance based on Butler's concept of 'performance' and 'performativity'. To achieve this, this study conducted in-depth interview with members of KBO sports fandom, along with adopting participant observation and online news articles and data analysis as ancillary methods. Total of 12 women and men interviewees were interviewed, and 50 online news articles and data were investigated. This study established mainly three approaches; first, this study attempted to organize the notion of male performance shown in traditional sports culture, and aimed to critically understand the convention which saw baseball fandom's identity as stable. Based on contexts that affect identity construction such as social?cultural changes and environmental conditions, this study focused on what performances helped create one's identity as baseball fan. Secondly, starting from the concept of 'performative sports fandom', an attempt was made to analyze performances of fandom in the field of sports. How women tried to verify their presence through parodic performances that emulates conventions and how their performances were eventually signified based on their sex was investigated. Lastly, focusing on Butler's argument on performativity of words, this study sought to understand interpellation and dominant ideologies that are immanent in discourses of baseball culture. As a result, women were experiencing limitation on their performances and self-surveillance through the interpellation of 'face-obsessed', and media discourses on baseball were not considering women as subjects or members of baseball culture. Nonetheless, through in-depth interviews with participants, changes in contexts regarding performativity of words and possibilities for ex-citable language performance were also detected. With such hints of changes, this study aimed to seek ways that break off from dominant ideologies of baseball culture, and suggested possibilities of redefining women's performances. In comparison to previous approaches regarding women's sports fandom and the stream of current Korean studies which did not fully integrate women as their proper aim of study, this study provides meaningful analysis in that it positioned women as the focus of cultural studies of sports. Moreover, the fact that it regarded women's performance as the subject of active analysis and that it attempted to understand various social·cultural contexts that surround women in baseball culture by adopting various methods proves this study's essence.
