This study traces the subjectivation process of makers to examine critically the domestic maker culture. Maker movement is a global tech-DIY culture starting from O'Reilly Media, the United States, whose slogan is “We are all makers.” This movement regards the renovation of digital production technique such as 3D printer and open-source hardware as the democratization of production, and declares that it is time for us all to become a creative producer based on share culture and peer production on the internet with this technological change. And, if we all participate in maker culture, we face the revolution of life and manufacturing renovation and new Industrial Revolution at the same time. Maker movement will construct the condition of economic change suggesting a cultural norm about the creative production to actively use digital technology. Because this is possible only through subjective practice of makers, maker movement is aimed at constructing subject.
I did documentary survey and interviewed 16 makers to analyse the domestic maker culture and the process of subject-constructing. This can investigate the force in the process of the domestic maker movement and its direction, and examine how makers recognize and construct their life style in terms of making, and, also, how they lead economic lives as a subject of maker culture. After all, I look into how they recognize maker culture and construct themselves and their world.
On-line communities and artist groups led their autonomous making culture in early days. However, technology startups were gaining a competitive advantage of maker culture as time went on. This tendency spreaded, but we could see a different movement which sought alternative or critical practices. The institutionalization of maker culture opened the material and semantic condition to act as a maker, but it has categorized their act and its meaning at the same time.
Makers do making of a skill play, and they grow to have authority by making something themselves. To them, making is not only a mere hobby but also a view of the world and a way of life. The play ethics based on making skill is a material idea through their lives, and epistemic condition supporting them. Makers apply for governmental support projects to secure resources necessary for making, or sustain their economic lives through outsourcing production and teaching. These segmented labors cause precarious economic life, but the desire for sustainable making let them endure the condition of precarious life. Moreover, makers are aware of the distortion of state-led maker movement, understand the present as a beginning stage that the fundamental foundation of maker culture is not formed yet. Makers build the prospect and strategy on their maker activity based on their experience and knowledge and, in doing so, maker culture is differentiated into many varieties.
