Focusing on participatory visual methodology and the digital environment, this study criticizes the current uses of visuals in the field of media cultural studies and discusses the potential of using visuals as research tool. At the same time, this study explores the possible extension of participatory visual methodology through transmedia and the digital environment. Ever since the invention of photography was declared in the mid-18th century, visuals have been utilized as scientific tool. Especially in the field of anthropology and sociology, cameras were used as recording devices when conducting ethnographic studies. Later, this led to the birth of visual anthropology and visual sociology. However, after the cultural turn and the crisis of representation in the 1980s, discussion on research methodology and researcher’s reflexivity was heightened, and visual methodology was reassessed as it had potential to exploit research subjects. As a response to such events, participatory visual methodology was invented, and as the turn of the century came near, the usage of participatory visual methodology grew.
In spite of all this, in the field of media cultural studies, visuals are only used in the context of visual analysis. Considering the importance of visuals in the contemporary society, overlooking the potential uses of visuals is uncanny. As the digital context and visual culture merged together throughout the first decade of 21st century, the amount of existing visuals grew exponentially, and the uses of visuals have changed as well. Such occasions demand new ways of utilizing visuals in the field of media cultural studies. At the same time, considering that media cultural studies strives to be reflexive at any stage of a research, it’s only logical to question the possible uses of participatory visual methodology and the ways visuals can affect research participants.
In order to achieve this, participatory visual methodology can be used to overcome the power mechanism that is inherent in the research process. Participatory visual methodology is also useful when collecting specific kind of data that can be elicited from the visuals. First of all, participatory visual methodology can be used with research participants who prefer visual expressions over oral expressions, such as children, immigrants and so on. In the process, visuals can function as metaphors for the intangibles like spatial experience and affect, thus visualizing them into tangible visual objects. As an essential part of visual methodology, visual-elicitation enables collecting responses and data that are qualitatively different from that of classic oral interviews. In addition, through participatory visual methodology, a researcher can overcome the spatial and temporal constraints, and defamiliarization through visuals can lead to catalytic validity and change in self-awareness.
Furthermore, participatory visual methodology helps overcoming the power mechanism between researcher and research participant as it empowers participants to be the specialist of one’s own life and environment. As the camera is handed over from researcher to research participant, a research participant can express one’s own situation, experience, daily life and feelings from one’s own perspective. Meanwhile, as participatory visual methodology considers the process after the research to be as important as the research process itself, the research data can be presented in forms other than research paper, such as exhibition and documentary film. Through this process, a research participant’s voice is lifted.
Moreover, the potential use of participatory visual methodology and its prospect have widened due to the digital environment. As visuals, sound and text converge into transmedia, the voice of a research participant is able to reach the public beyond the academic world. At the same time, the digital environment makes it possible for a research to achieve the participation intact, and the participation in this context is perceived as a two-way conversation, not a one-sided monologue.
This study is significant because it criticizes the limited uses of visuals in the field of media cultural studies and tries to investigate visuals’ ability to function as empowering research tool. Moreover, this study explores the potential uses of participatory visual methodology in the field of media cultural studies, and evaluates the current usage of participatory visual methodology overseas.
