This study critically analyzes discourse of intellectuals over Japanese military ‘comfort women’ issue, focusing on the situation of Comfort Women of the Empire. Intellectuals have played a pivotal role in the process of releasing the testimonies of survivors of the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ and the development of the Japanese ‘comfort women’ movement and research. Comfort Women of the Empire, published in 2013, resonated among intellectuals and resulted in various levels of discourse contention with the complaints of the ‘comfort women’. This study examines the discourse contestation of intellectuals in the academic discourse and media discourse with the methodology of CDA(Critical Discourse Analysis) and analyzes discourses related to the Japanese ‘comfort women’ victim/survivor and the solutions of the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ issue.
The discourse over the situation of Comfort Women of the Empire appeared in a discourse contestation over ways of reading Comfort Women of the Empire and judicial process intervention. The controversy over reading comprehension appeared as a conflict between critics who question the author's narrative style and purpose and Professor Park Yuha and her advocates who criticize them for ‘distorting’ and ‘misreading’. The discourses they produced also expanded the topography of discourse by combining with the discourses outside the text of Comfort Women of the Empire. Park Yuha, emphasizing her attention to the ‘marginalized voice’ among ‘comfort women’, was interpreted as a position to promote the Feminism project on the one hand and criticize the anti-Japanese nationalism on the other hand, and this image was reinforced by the support of Chizuko Ueno, a prominent Japanese feminist scholar, and Korean progressive intellectuals. Critics, however, have seen the core of 'comfort women' in Park Yuha and Chizuko Ueno as 'feminism without colonialism' and 'feminism of empire', which further emphasizes the affinity between Park Yuha and Japanese ‘liberal’ intellectuals and produces the discourse of interpreting Comfort Women of the Empire in the context of historical revisionism.
The discourse contestation over the judicial process was centered on the discourse of 'academic freedom'. The academic domain was represented as being separate from the legal domain, but discourses were then produced asking about the boundaries of the two domains. In the meantime, even after the accusation, the discourse contestation over reading comprehension of Comfort Women of the Empire was continued in the academic literature, but in the media discourse, the discourse of ‘academic freedom’ emerged as the dominant discourse and replaced the previous discussion.
Despite the expansion of the discourse topography due to various levels of discourse contestation and the articulation with the discourse outside Comfort Women of the Empire, the discourses are based on a specific knowledge of 'comfort women'. In order to understand this, this study tried to analyze what kind of discourses are formed regarding the Japanese ‘comfort women’ victim/survivor and the solution of the Japanese ‘comfort women’ issue. Discussions on how to reproduce the Japanese ‘comfort women’ victim/survivor range from the issue of the name of the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ to the discussions over the ‘comrade-like relationship’ and the interpretation of the ‘the girl statue of peace’ raised by Comfort Women of the Empire. Intellectuals also claimed to be agents of 'grandmother' by estimating the feelings of 'comfort women' or by judging the defamation, which leads to the problem of interpreting the act of suing as the subjectivity of ‘comfort women’.
Park Yuha's claim in Comfort Women of the Empire that she could only accept moral responsibility was opposed to the discourse of ‘legal responsibility of the Japanese government’, which was dominant until 2010s. In this regard, the advocates of Comfort Women of the Empire produced discourses that put the Korea-Japan relationship first, as well as a discourse that opposes the Japanese government's legal liability or that is skeptic of its effects. On the other hand, critics have raised a controversy over the 'diplomatic reconciliation' alleged by Park Yuha and other advocates, emphasizing the legal responsibility of the Japanese government. Critics also imagined a more concrete solution to the Japanese ‘comfort women’ issue and suggested discussions to be dealt with after Comfort Women of the Empire.
It is significant that this study shows the discourse of the intellectuals over the situation of Comfort Women of the Empire. Not only did intellectuals play a key role in the process of producing discourses, but they also established specific ‘comfort women’ knowledge. However, the distortions and logical contradictions made in the process of discourse contestation, 'academic freedom' discourse that occupied media discourse, eradication of subjectivity in the process of reproducing Japanese military 'comfort women', attempting to present themselves as agents of ‘comfort women’ indicate that the post-colonial knowledge system still remains among the intellectuals. In this regard, this study suggests that the role of the intellectuals in relation to the issue of Japanese military ‘comfort women’ should be reconsidered and that the viewpoint of post-colonial feminism should be introduced.
