While there are active discussions of the positive or negative functions of the game. this study examines the relationship between adolescent's gaming experience, social capital and euphoria in order to provide more empirical evidence. It starts with the premise that various positive experiences made through games can have a significant impact on social relationships and satisfaction in real life. In previous research, very few studies included various dimensions of the game experience, set it as a major variable, and analyzed its effects. Only a small number of qualitative and exploratory studies are available on users' gaming experiences, mainly through in-depth interviews. Therefore, the concept of game experience was reconstructed into the main dimensions, and empirical analysis was attempted based on quantitative data on how these game experiences work on the social capital formation and euphoria of users. The analysis was done as a longitudinal study. Until now, domestic game studies has been mainly focused on synchronic analyses, and a longitudinal analysis has been performed rarely. In addition, the need for longitudinal analysis was recently raised due to conflicting results in cross-sectional analysis and longitudinal analysis in relation to game effects.
First, it has been examined whether the adolescent’s game experience increased happiness and expanded social capital. Gaming experience can be defined as ‘the perception that game users have by interpreting the actions and results of the games in their real lives’. The factors that make up these game experiences can be defined in various ways, but the study considered Adaptive Game Use, Game Efficiency, Game Normality, and Game Leadership among the research items of the "Game User Panel Survey" data as the main components of the game experience composition. Among these factors, Adaptive Game Use and Game Efficiency are factors in which a game player recognizes and interprets game usage in relation to his or her own various conditions, abilities, and emotions. Game Normality and Game Leadership can be categorized into factors that are recognized and interpreted in relation to social relationships and norms with others.
The analysis demonstrated that gaming experience does not directly affect the happiness of adolescents. While supporting some of the research findings that games are being used to escape the negative situation of their reality, these results could be interpreted as a negative experience if external/social perceptions of flow experience are negative or conflict with other people’s interests. Therefore, rather than viewing gaming experience as a direct precursor to happiness, it is necessary to see how it interacts with other variables that affect happiness.
On the other hand, positive experience in most games, except for Game Efficiency, has been shown to contribute directly to expanding social resources for adolescents. In particular, the positive experience of games has been shown to have a greater impact on expanding the bonding social capital. Adolescent gaming can also expand interaction with new people, but it can also strengthen existing relationships. In addition, the gaming experience in the first year was in negative relation to social capital, but over time, the gaming experience was shown to increase social capital, indicating the significance of the longitudinal analysis.
The impact of the gaming experience on one’s happiness was dependent on the different levels of social capital. Differential Impact Hypothesis model to media effects, a Differential Susceptibility to Media Effects Model, or a Construal Level Theory, explains that what game players experience through games can be very different at a cognitive and situational level, and the effects change accordingly. This is in line with the need for a target-centered analysis, not a variable-centered analysis, in social science. While Variable-Centered Approach game research is missing differences between individuals and groups, it is important to consider that individual experiences and their effects in game research differ in various contexts.
Analysis shows that the impact of the gaming experience on one’s happiness varies depending on the level of social capital. Most gaming experiences have a universally negative impact on happiness, but it has been shown that the results are being adjusted according to what level of social capital is. In particular, the high social capital group showed a relatively positive effect on the happiness of the game rather than the low social capital group. In the case of the low social capital group, the more positive the first-year gaming experience was, the less effective social capital was in reducing one’s happiness.
Specifically, in groups with high social capital, Adaptive Game Use, Game Efficiency, and Game Leadership reduced happiness less. In groups with high bonding capital, Game Efficacy decreased happiness less. In a group with high bridging capital, Adaptive Game Use and Game leadership have reduced their happiness less. Game norms showed that groups with low social capital reduce happiness less. Also, among the effects of all gaming experiences on happiness, the level of combined capital demonstrated the strongest relief effect. For adolescents with high social capital, game experience reduces happiness less than it does not, but for those with low social capital, the more positive one’s early gaming experience is, the less happy it is. Therefore, for adolescents with lower social capital, positive gaming experience can be seen as a much greater relief in reducing happiness. This research proves that positive gaming experiences contribute to increasing social capital, and that social capital can serve as a strengthening factor in influencing happiness. These findings are also meaningful in that they are longitudinal analysis of data that has been measured over many years. This study differs from existing studies that have had universally negative results from a one-time cross-sectional study due to the fact the longitudinal study results continue to change over time.
