This study aims to analyze how significant the self-awareness and experience as a "Festival Goer" is to the audience who willingly spend their time and money to join the Music festival.
Since the live music performance became one of the crucial factors of the modern music industry, various festivals held around the world became important tourist attractions. Since the participation of the events compromises one's economic and physical power, joining the show in person may seems ironic in this modern world, where the access to the various music source is easier than any other points in the human history.
Thus, in modern society thing it is losing the original meaning of the festival, contrastively, music festivals are becoming the place where we can witness the participants creating the original meaning of "Chaos" by themselves.
Thus, on the premise that the word 'Music festival' should be separated from ordinary "Live music performance", this study focuses on the idea that audience of different events should also be differentiated. I initiated the study with the argument that the social implication of the Music festival should be discussed through analyzing the experience of the individuals who joined the festival. Also this study also aims to find out what kind of social implications are shown in the daily lives of goers after enjoying the festival.
In this point, I tracked the path where ordinary listeners of music are turning into enthusiastic goer of the festival and also discovered 'the phase of division' among the audience. I approached this phenomenon with the discussion of 'play' and 'leisure', and finally concluded that the experience of the goers can be explained by the idea of 'interaction ritual chains'. For further understanding of the subject, interviews of festival enthusiasts and the record of my own experience in the festivals are also attached.
As a result, it became obvious that there is a clear difference between the 'goers' of live music performance and ordinary audience in what they expect and experience from the events. By studying the rituals of festival along the concept of emotions, symbolism, and morality, I could easily discover the collective effervescence generated by collective emotional energy of the crowd.
To conclude, what 'goers' experience in the event doesn't easily dissipate after the festival, but it penetrates deeply in to their daily lives and shows the formation of individual self-awareness. It also questions that "what is the true meaning of 'joy' in the contemporary society?". While the most studies of 'festivals and their audience' in the past mainly focus on the quantitative research which proves their economic and industrial significance, this study tries to achieve deeper understanding of the event and its participants with cultural aspect.
