As various information has been distributed and users have formed social relationships through mobile media, the emotional and affective dimension, which have not been well dealt with, have emerged as an important area of research. This study examines an affective flow and the process of constructing affective fact through mobile media noting the circulation of disinformation which has not been clearly identified as objective facts and has a conservative political tendency around some the elderly smartphone users. Affect formed in the network of relationships between media and users makes various dynamics, and it appears differently across the socio-cultural context. It is also important to note that media experience varies depending on the characteristics of the media user. The elderly smartphone users have recently been visible in public sphere as they are participating in politics in various ways such as accessing and sharing various information or news through mobile media. This phenomenon shows the affective flow which is characterized by movement and activity. This Study examines the affective flow and its evidence by focusing on the point where the elederly smartphone users’ experience, mobile media and an affect intersect.
‘Affect’ is clearly perceived, but it is difficult to define concisely. This study defines an affect as ‘latent power producing an emotional effect to the subject instantaneously when actors encounter each other’ and ‘a social atmosphere that is transmitted with an activity.’ Based on this definition, this study explores the process of constructing affective fact and the point where an affect connects to the formation of users’ social relationships. This study focuses on the specific case of the instant messenger Kakao Talk which the elderly smartphone users primarily use and examines the affective experiences of the users in mobile environment with digital ethnography and in-depth interview. Also it focuses on the diplomatic and economic conflicts between South Korean and Japan that erupted from June to August 2019, even though a lot of topics are circulating in the mobile media space.
Various media devices such as photos, videos, voices and texts are arranged in mobile media. They evokes a certain affect which combines anxiety, contempt, anger and affection by leaving micro-perception to users who encounter to these media devices and information. This affective flow which is detected in a mobile media also connects to the users’ cognitive process of constructing reality, and we call it the affective fact. Affective fact is supported by the affect which the users actually have, even though it doesn't have objective grounds. In this study, the interviewees shared the fear of war and communization evoked by information which they encountered as they use mobile media. This fear is also connected to their experiences about the Korean War. The affect shared among interviewees such as anxiety or fear is constructing the affective fact on various topics. Meanwhile, the affect and the affective fact mediatized by mobile media also reconstructs the social relationships of the interviewees. Most of Interviewees were constantly sharing their affect as they networked with people who share their thoughts and feelings through mobile media, and on the other hand, they were at odds with people who could not share the affect. This study shows that interviewees are undergoing a process of tuning their affect in their everyday life, and that the process composes the field of sympathy, which is various affective flows compete each other.
This study has a significance in that it reveals the affective dynamics through an specific case study, especially focused on Korean society. Above all, it examines the use of mobile media by the elderly smartphone users who are not discussed well in media cultural studies. By examining the affective flow on mobile media through the empirical approaches, this study reveals the affective politics which is operating in Korean society and also suggests the possibility of expansion of media cultural studies.
