This study focuses on female gamers’ embodied experiences and their relevance to digital virtual space. A phenomenological study was conducted on 10 female game players who played the First Person Shooter(FPS) game (2016). The discussions of media philosophy, phenomenology, and feminism were utilized as theoretical resources.

First, this study tries to reflect the recent ‘material turn’ in media philosophy. Digital space is often expected as an alternative space since the bodily indexes that imply one’s race or gender are not prominent in digital spaces. Recent trends in media philosophy, however, resist the disembodying properties of the digital space and focus on the materiality of the media. Furthermore, playing digital games is a carnal experience, as it promotes physical interaction between humans and the media. This study argues that the digital game became a significant scholarly subject in both areas of media philosophy and the perspective of the body.

Second, discussions of phenomenology provide perspectives on the existential body that a materialistic view might overlook. Merleau-Ponty’s theories about body took a central part in this study. Merleau-Ponty suggested a notion of the ‘body schema’, or the acquisition of the bodily habit that enables people to use new instruments such as a bicycle or a typewriter. This idea of ‘body schema’ could also be applied to playing FPS games, as the game demands players’ bodily participation and mechanical control skills.

Third, discussions from feminist technoscience were useful in this study, since the study tries to examine the mutual regulation between digital games and women. The body has always been an important topic in feminism. The discussions of feminist technoscience served as a theoretical bridge that connects the keywords of media, women and the body.

The results of the study are as follows. The female gamer participants showed their status as a ‘transcendental presence’, while at the same time a situated female body who internalized the female gamer stereotypes. This could be the ‘contradictory feminine bodily existence’ which Iris Marion Young has suggested. However, even in these restrictions, female game players engaged and moved toward the world based on their orientation. Sometimes the restrictions that female game players encountered functioned as a productive force that resulted in unexpected outcomes. While playing FPS games, participants grew attention on computer technologies or peripheral devices such as gaming mouse, keyboards, monitors and cables. Some female game player participants joined the solidarity community of female gamers to improve the female excluding gaming culture.

Most game researches from the feminist point of view focus on the female character’s representation or investigate the different tendency between female and male game players. This study, on the other hand, attempts a phenomenological method that focuses on the attributes of the digital game media. Furthermore, applying the feminist discussions of the body on digital games, these arguments have still proven to be true in digital spaces. Specifically, this study extends the discussions of ‘feminine motility’ suggested by Iris Young, applying these modalities of the ‘feminine bodily existence’ into the era of the digital world.

Starting from 2014, online abuses against female gamers such as ‘#Gamergate’ has been brought up as serious problems. This study tries to consider the present situation that constructs the female gamer’s bodily experience. This problematic could be extended to other dimensions of the digital everyday life of women.
