This study aims to analyze how the religious identity and the religious practice of young Canaan Christians are created and developed. Across the study, the post-religious discourse, a prevailing discourse in the Korean society, is critically analyzed. The analysis confirms that the post-religious discourse expands the problem of certain institutional religions to the problems of the whole society, such as the loss of morality, without distinguishing difference between the decrease in the religiosity of humans and the decrease in the number of Christians in institutional religion. This reveals how Canaan Christians are signified to be immoral and abnormal. Further, this study conducts in-depth interviews with young Canaan Christians. The interviews intends to discover a variety of religiosity and cultural practices of the young Canaan Christians which previous studies have paid no attention to. This study takes Stuart Hall's ‘cultural identity’ and Paul Willis's ‘penetration’ and ‘limitation’ as a theoretical framework. Their concepts best understand which ideological elements correspond to the young Canaan Christians’ religious identity and religious practices, exceeding the limitations of existing substantial religious concepts.
The result indicates that Young Canaan Christians were not deviators complaining about church or unethical beings. They were forming their identity based on distinctive ethical standards. In fact, on their ethical basis, they were trying to resolve the contradictions between the ethics they pursue and the Protestant faith, possessing the terms Protestant doctrines and Christianity. Their ethical basis is composed of 'civil ethics' that actively and autonomously seek for social interests, and their civil-ethical identity penetrates the connection between power of institutional religion and dominant ideology. The dominant ideologies were neo-liberal ideology, androcentrism, and political conservatism in Korean society, and young Canaan Christians built their identity by expanding their thoughts based on certain ideological penetration.
The religious practice of the young Canaan Christians were also shifting from religious rituals to social. This implies that the practice as ‘religious action’ became important in modern society beyond the dichotomy of religion and secularity. However, the civil ethical religious identity of the young Canaan Christians did not only give birth to resistant acts to the dominant ideology. The behavior of young Canaan Christians were consisted with antithesis between current Protestants. It also shows a ‘distinction’ aspect building a hierarchy with current Protestants through religious and cultural preferences. Moreover, the religious practice of the young Canaan Christians was being restricted by ideological factors in some points. The neo-liberalistic capitalist ideology led the young Canaan Christians to pursue their own sincerity and self-development, and the attainment of civil ethical values became a sort of meritocracy. While young Canaan Christians’ practices were resistant at social and church levels in issues like homosexuality, androcentric ideologies limited the practices to patriarchal ideologies within the family. Lastly, while they take religious actions in the realm of institutional politics with definite political ideals regarding political conservatism, there was a tendency that the socially disadvantaged group are described as an abstract concept and exist as an ideal slogan.
However, it cannot be interpreted mechanically that the religious practice of the young Canaan Christians is bound by distinction or ideological limitations on their overall practice. As Stuart Hall said, ideology can be resisted within historical and concrete dynamics. Their practice can be rather interpreted as a "process" that defies ideology while going back and forth between penetration and limitations. Crossing the conscious and unconscious dimensions, the civil-ethical religious identity of the young Canaan Christians refracts ideological elements and creates religious practices. Eventually, these practices are created beyond the distinction between secular and religious in all areas of microscopic daily life, which in turn forms the basis for their identity.
The study is significant in that it reveals the ethical basis underlying the religious identity of the young Canaan Christians. Furthermore, it is in line with the traditional cultural research as the research aims to examine in relation to specific ideological elements beyond abstract ethical concepts. However, function and role of religion constantly changes in modern society. Therefore, not only religious studies but also cultural studies and the overall academic community are required to continue to study the impact of religion on society and society on religion.
