This study focuses on young feminist groups emerging in areas where there had been no or little feminist movement, as feminist discourse has widely spread from online spaces since the mid-to-late 2010s in South Korea. This study raises the importance of geographic diversity in social science research while addressing the tendency of assuming that young women living in Seoul serve as ‘norm’ subjects. The main research question is: How does ‘provincial’ (in Korean: ‘Ji-Bang,’ which means an inferior, marginalized area compared to the center, especially the capital city Seoul) as a kind of discourse construction, as symbolic stigma, or as relatively insufficient capital, intervene in the formation of a feminist subject?
Area A, the researcher's hometown, a small city, and a so-called ‘provincial’ area, is the research location for this study. The participatory observation was conducted on and , led by students from B University in area A, and in-depth interviews were conducted with those present in the meeting. In addition, the data of the in-depth interviews of members of other feminist groups in area A were used as auxiliary data. Through the analysis of this research data, the following two analysis branches were constructed. First, take the femininity or gender norms as keywords based on the themes of “relationship” and “management of appearance resources,” which were the most frequently mentioned in the research data. These were interpreted in conjunction with the research participants’ perceptions of feminism.
The study results are as follows. First, when examining the context of the family environment, the typical gender role or gender reward system, in which the man earns money and the woman does the housework, is hardly evident among the study participants. The research participants, who grew up watching women who had a strong ability to maintain their livelihoods, rather than women who just took care of the household, strategically attempted to gain a temporary upper hand in their relationships with men. At the same time, they were required to strictly manage their appearances. Although they took care of their appearances, they showed a wild attitude toward men. In this respect, for the participants, feminism was understood as the practice that reduces the pressure on a woman’s appearance and cuts off intimate relationships with men.
The second focus was on feminist stigma and fear. The 'provincial' area, where 'everyone is connected by a small social network,' had a strong tendency to be exclusive, and the feminist stigma operated very strongly within it. The feminist gatherings were operated in a closed manner, completely excluding outsiders, that is, men, to make them safe. Most of the research participants had a high level of fear of feminist stigma. However, some research participants acquired temporary mobility and had the time to examine their situation objectively so that some of the fears that had been amplified could be resolved.
On the other hand, the stigma of a 'provincial’ university student and the negative perception that the research participants had by themselves as 'provincial’ students led them to not show affection for their 'provincial' space and keep their distance instead. The members were mainly divided into those who participated and those who did not, and a very strong relationship was formed between those who mainly participated, while those who did not tended to be rather isolated. As the opportunity for face-to-face meetings has decreased since the COVID-19 crisis, the number of people who mainly participate has not increased, so the strong connection within the group has tended to gradually weaken. The existence of the face-to-face network was very important in relieving the anxiety of the feminist gathering participants.
This study is meaningful as it sheds light on the experiences of young women from non-metropolitan areas. These women have been invisible in both the youth discourse in non-metropolitan areas, as well as in the women's youth discourse. It is also significant that this case study contributes to our understanding of how the intersectional conditions affecting young women from non-metropolitan areas form their subjectivity as young feminists.
