The starting point of this study is well-known social phenomenon, 'self-camera'. Comparing to the old days, talking about oneself became a very natural behavior. It is quite clear that this trend and related methods are expanding along with the technological development such as digital camera which evoked the 'self-camera' phenomenon. My interest which departed from 'self-camera' is, first, the relationship between the representation-subject 'I' and the represented object 'I' and, second, the media itself which is used by the representation-subject 'I'. These media have shifted from still image(photograph) to moving image(video).Historically, representing oneself has been linked to the improvement of self-consciousness. It has achieved its concrete form as 'self-story' in literature (autobiography, diary) and 'self-image' in painting(self-portrait) established. And to see how this process appears in the new medium called 'video' is the main purpose of this study. For this purpose, I made a definition of the term 'self-reflection': it is a behavior that the representation-subject turns his/her view and recognition to oneself which makes him/her to objectify and personify him/herself, and image the objectified self in the artwork with a concrete appearance. To conceptualize 'self-reflection' more clear, I compared the concept with 'self-reflexivity' which is an important mark of modernism that examines oneself and his/her condition. And then I observed where these two concepts join in 'video'.To see how the self-reflection appears in 'video', I searched the cases of self-reflection in other medium which were remediated by video in two aspect: content(image) and form. In the aspect of content, I observed how 'self-image' became the subject matter in self-portrait and what the specific features the subject matters had. In the aspect of form, I checked t between enunciator 'I' and represented 'I' through the notion of implied author of diary or autobiography in literature. The notion of 'The Other' was also examined since the writers cannot be free from recognizing others even when writing about themselves. On the other hand, a historical research on 'self-story' in moving image was another part of my research. As a result, it was found that the makers of early cinema and the avant-garde films had taken their subject matters from their daily lives and themselves. With the discussions above, I investigated the identity of video in the aspect of not only technology, but also psychology. This identity of video and its position in modern arts are interesting in that video exists in the antagonistic cultural structure of art and technique, systematized production of art and personalized production of art, commercialization and de-commercialization and so on.Therefore self-reflection in video is unique and meaningful in the historical context. By putting together all the mentioned above, I was able to find a way to approach the 'self-reflection' in video. The subject matter of self-reflection can be classified according to 'how representation-subject 'I' see the object 'I': First is the idealized 'I' to leave records and show off oneself. Second is the 'I' that is formed through metaphor and metonymy. Third is the expressing 'I' who cannot be unified as he/she is aware of the lack. Last is the 'I' who is fragmented according to specific purposes. These classification is, however, not perfectly mutually exclusive and therefore can be overlapped in some degree. I was able to conclude that the self-reflection of video is how enunciator 'I' represent the objectified 'I'. And I expanded the related discussion basing on the frame I drew inductively from video's own identity as medium, the formal aspect of literature a aspect of content in paintings. I used domestically produced video images as examples to support the discussion. It is notable that the subjectivity video constitute is different from those of other media like movie or television. Especially, video's self-reflection is unique in that it emphasizes the individual users' active utilization. On the other hand, the conflict between the representation-subject 'I'(implied writer) and the variously-represented 'I' was one of this study's interest. It is a matter of the subject's unification and fragmentation that emerges from video's self-reflection and I studied it by observing the conflicts and hierarchy between the subject who desires to express him/herself and the represented object which has to be controlled by the subject. The self-reflection in video is to practice a visual medium on a personal level. It is a spot which is linked to the matter of medium and subject, and where subjectivity and personal view can be regained. After all, the meaning of self-reflection can be concluded, first, as the realization of modernism as it is a search on the matter of subject and medium, and, second, as the realization of post modernity in that it criticizes the major discourse 'narrative' which exists on top of individual subjects, directs the collapse of Realism and enables the subjects to enjoy self-fragmentation.
