It is quite probable that people get to build up distorted images in their mind if they are shown only negative aspects of a certain foreign world repeatedly instead of balanced images of the entirety. It is judged that it is the case with Islamic countries, which have been identified with negative images despite of a fact that Koreans in general do not have any direct conflicts with them. Accordingly, it is the objective of this research to find out whether the stereotyping of the western news media is being practiced also in Korean television news in the practice of identifying the Islamic world with the terrorism.309 international news on the Islamic world reported by three domestic airwave television news channels (KBS, MBC, and SBS) during the year of 2006 were analyzed for the study. In order to capture both aspects of the visual language as well as spoken language of the news, quantitative analysis and also qualitative analysis known as critical discourse analysis (CDA) were employed for this study.According to the quantitative analysis, the domestic television news were all tilted toward a few specific countries and the news were released mostly in a frame of big news events. Those news events dealt with negative and deviating subjects such as wars, natural catastrophes, nuclear conflicts, and bloody demonstrations. And more news were edited versions of news originally released by the Western news media than those dispatched by their own reporters from the action scenes. Such a reporting trend shares the same trait with that of the Western newsmedia, which has helped in strengthening negative images on the Third World by dealing with largely negative news events while ignoring their positive side of social advancement.According to the analysis on the image presentation of the news, people of the Islamic world were presented in a group of people, ignoring their individual characteristics, and typical males in the crowd were presented in an image of persons whose rational side was overcome by extreme emotion. On the contrary, leaders of the Islamic world were presented in stable images in a same way as those leaders of the Western world are presented, while general female and youth populations were presented as victims of tragedies. And their normal day settings were mostly portrayed prominently by images of ''violence and chaos'' in the shapes of terrorism, shooting scene, natural catastrophe, violent demonstration, etc. Also the news kept strengthening the negative images of the Islamic world by using repeatedly the materials from their data base which tend to emphasize the threatening images of insurgent groups and possible nuclear weapon attacks. Only exception was about Dubai, which is actually regarded more as a western country rather than an Islamic one, and image presentations on this country were mostly on the positive side, contrary to the cases of other Islamic countries.Even in the lingual presentations, the news presented the Islamic people as participants of a group of angered people, or passive people helpless in front of terrorism and catastrophes. While individualistic characters were ignored in the core of the news, negative and deviating scenes captioned by such words as ''extreme confusion, total chaos, tragedy, disaster'' were on the focus. Also sometimes news portrayed USA or Israel as protagonist and some of the Islamic countries as antagonists, and, bon top of such an attitude, the news media exhibited a tendency of looking at the Islamic world from the viewpoint, and in the voice of, Western world including USA, in dealing with various issues. However, in the news on the Israel''s attack on Lebanon, and the America''s invasion of Iraq, the newsmedia showed critical attitudes toward USA, \r\nfollowing their antiwar sentiment. The tendency of the newsmedia of concentrating on the negative aspects and looking at the Islamic world from the viewpoint of the Western world is coinciding with that of the Orientalism practice by the Western newsmedia. This may be regarded as a case of internalization in a sense that Korea, a non-Western entity, is talking about the Islamic world, another non-Western entity. Also such a tendency is partially a result of the reality in which there exists imbalance in the international information flows and, as a result, the domestic newsmedia has to rely heavily on the Western newsmedia. However, a fact that a portion of the Korean newsmedia reports studied were affirmed to be critical toward USA shows that the Orientalism is not practiced in its entirety in the domestic television news. In other words, in the process of adopting the Orientalism in general, some deviations are in progress as well.
