This Study examines the present situation of the appearance of East-Asian cooperation blockbuster films in the context of the discourse on East-Asia after the Cold War. East-Asianism originated from a colonial Asianism that centered on Japanese imperialism before modernization, but the discourse on the East-Asian Pacific community which surfaced after the Cold War seeks to pursue both glocalization and solidarity through culture. In the scene of cinema studies, East-Asian films have either developed independently, disconnected from other state-nations, or have sustained a national cinema that has become generally known through awards in international film festivals. However, a commercial cinema that copied Hollywood blockbusters came about as a result of the introduction of Western cinema technology and economic development. In the precess, East-Asian cooperation films that combined capital and talent for the purpose of creating a market that extends beyond the East-Asian boundary came onto the scene. The East-Asian cooperation blockbuster is contradictory because it tries to adhere to the blockbuster's logic of capitalism, and at the same time elicit sympathy based on East-Asian culture and history. Also, while copying the Hollywood-blockbuster, it also tried to stand opposed to it by resorting to spectacles provided by the large scale settings of war and martial arts within Chinese history. This has caused worries about a possible cultural hegemony centering on China and a neglect of the contemporary situation and unsolved historical problems within East-Asia. Despite all this, the East-Asian cooperation blockbuster has become a form of cultural and economic cooperation and has brought about the integration of the East-Asian market. In addition, it created an opportunity to position East-Asia outside of the orientalistic discourse--an obsession to free oneself from or resist against Western hegemony--as creators of superior cultural content. The significance of the East-Asian blockbuster in this study is that it provides an opportunity to examine the patterns of the cooperative producing system and consumption of popular culture in East-Asia, not because it is a tool for realizing the ideals of an actual cultural community. The significance of this study is that by examining a recent cultural trend, it attempts to read the various levels of meaning, such as capitalism and nationalistic desires, moving away from abstract discussions on the East-Asian discourse and textual analysis of films. Furthermore, the significance of this study lies in its attempt to discuss the possibility of whether or not an East-Asian cultural network can be created in a practical sense.
