This research studies how young adults of a protestant missionary group designated as “M” forms their identity in the era of neo-liberalism through in-depth interviews and participatory observations. Neo-liberalism and Protestantism are understood as a political rationality or ideology that subjectifies the objects by instilling a unique mode of thought into them. Moreover, the identities of university graduates as well as graduates-to-be Protestants are viewed as areas where political rationality, and the ideology of neo-liberalism as well as Protestant missionary groups, compete, collude and coexist. These identities are areas where neo-liberal subjectification, aestheticization, or rationalization takes place. This study analyzes what forms the identities of the young adults of the group, by adopting post-modern identity concepts, regarded as multiple, composed, and de-centric. The participants discourse on their transformation into Protestants as a “personal” and “individualistic” encounter with God, Simultaneously, they used their personal relationship with God as a central mechanism of life-management by suture or exclusion of neo-liberal discourses. The subjects of “M” were called “the community person” where their identity was composed of various discourses, such as, “a life for God”, “a disciplined and dedicated disciple”, and “familial community”. At the same time, however, they had difficulties in understanding and explaining themselves in a neo-liberal environment, in some cases experiencing identity crisis. This problem along with the need for a new identity set up the possibilities of intervention and suture of neo-liberal discourses. The young adults about to enter a neo-liberal reality seemed to rationalize their self-improvement “for God”, but concurrently showed an uneconomical and irrational self, fleeing a neo-liberal subjectification, In addition, with the understandings on God as the chief manager of their lives and themselves as workers, they follow the discourse of “God’s management and responsibility”, taking risks and uncertain paths, as well as an optimistic view on their future. The analysis suggests the following findings. First, the particular modes of thought of neo-liberalism and the Protestant reside in the identity of the individuals as specified discourses that help to understand themselves and others. It also shows how these discourses are used as the technologies and ethics that conduct themselves. Second, despite the fact that individuals under the influence of neo-liberalism rationalize themselves and conform to the neo-liberal government, they tend to take an aestheticization view of themselves, thus, resisting and escaping neo-liberalism. Lastly, communities at risk of disintegrating under the influence of neo-liberalism, show the needs for self-reflection on whether the members embrace neo-liberal discourses and ethics, which are the cause for identity crisis, or not. The communities need to be aware of the techniques of the neo-liberal government and prepare a suitable countermeasure. They will need to continue their efforts as weel as make an effort of subjectifying themselves. This study contributes to existing studies of neo-liberalism in a sense that the plausibility of the studies on audience and identity for the individuals under the influence of the neo-liberal government is sought, and that the discourses from a Protestant missionary group in competition, collusion and coexistence with neo-liberal discourses are analyzed, and finally, the foundation for movement and resistance is laid. Nevertheless, due to lack of overall understanding on in-depth interviewing as an identity analysis research method and interview skills, in addition to the inclusion of superficial questions posed the boundaries of this work. Therefore, these limitations require future studies, which will benefit from a formulation of creative and more suitable question in order to draw out even more immersive and sincere stories from the participants.
