While the basic role of broadcasting was limited to delivering information in the past, the contemporary society requires it to take on more roles these days. In particular, with the development of multi-media bringing social changes, the broadcasting environment evolved as well. The role of broadcasting has expanded to the appreciation of art content. Among the changes, one of the most noticeable characteristics in media is the increase in numbers of broadcasting channels. A more conscious and culturally enlightened public has higher expectations about broadcasting content and quality. Furthermore, it is essential to develop art content to attract more audience with the increase in numbers of channels. To survive in the viewership competition, producers consequently endeavor to establish content that viewers find reliable and unique. There are so many TV or radio channels including free-to-air, cable, and satellite that viewers do not even know what they want to watch. Therefore, creating image of a channel to leave a strong impression on audience is one of the most important tasks for producers. Much research on channel identity has been conducted and considerable outcome produced in visual identity. Compared with research in visual identity which has shown progress to an extent, that in sound identity is still minimal. It is more effective to employ several senses together when human register and memorize information. Likewise, utilizing both visual and auditory senses is the most effective method in perceiving broadcast content. In the same way, by using both visual and auditory senses in creating channel identity, broadcasting service providers can leave a stronger impression on viewers. This dissertation begins from recognizing the importance of a broadcasting channel's audio identity which had been overlooked so far. In Chapter 2, the concept and purpose of channel identity are clarified and the examples of sound identity analyzed These analyses show sound can be an important element in establishing the identity in various fields. How the sound image is formed and the forms in which it exists are studied after elements of music and sound are investigated. Methods with which the sound identity of a channel could effectively be established are laid out. This paper presents the variation technique which modifies the components of music with a single theme. Chapter 3 examines elements, broadcasted domestically and internationally, and indicative of the sound identity of channels, to confirm the existence of the sound identity and uncover their characteristics. This research has offered the designed sound representing identity of SBS, one of Korea's largest broadcast ings tat ions. The sound works that have been created from the basic linguistic image of the mot to of SBS are: Basic Ident i f icat ionM usici Two Ser iesiN ews Ti t lei andN ext. I believe these will contribute to the embodiment of channel identity by helping SBS to establish a differentiated identity from other stations, maintaining consistency,a nd funct ioninga s an ef f icientp roduct ionm anual .
