My thesis is a planned book design in the age of new media. The book publishing has been constantly underwent technological evolutions throughout the ages. Since the inventions of letters, books adopted different media for the conveying of informations and knowledge. The history of book goes back to a few thousand years, starting from the use of bones, stones, woods, papyrus, inks and brush before the printing invention of Gutenberg(The Gutenberg Bible,circa 1455) 500 years ago. The technical innovation in the book design publishing in the 20 century has been evolutionary, if not revolutionary as the old media had embraced the new media called "digital media." Until the 1980's old media, including book industries, relied primarily upon print and analog design models just as those television,radio, and press did. The last three decades, however, have seen the rapid transformation into the new media predicated upon the use of digital computers such as the Internet. Even traditional media forms such as books and printing press went through technical evolutions, adopting image manipulation software like Adobe Photoshop and desktop publishing tools. As the result, the old separated media came to be converged into the new media of digital technologies. This type of media convergence can be defined as as phenomena of new media or digital media, remaking more traditional media forms to adopt and adapt the new media technologies. Accordingly the Planned book publishing uses the advantages of modern design technologies from the planning stage, layout, production, and marketing, without the limitations of subject matter, form, and style.\r\nIn the digital work of new media, traditional paper books no longer occupy the traditional sole monopoly. In order to compete and even to survive, paper books must admit their limitations and enlist the technical cooperation of internet web sites not only to enhance their readability and legibility but to improve their time lines with the use of hyper links. Traditional book designers used a basic layout, grid, and typography but the modern site designer has the advantage of flash, movie, and audio technology. Now typography has a new dimension of writing style as well of image, contained as one medium. This writer believes that well planned designers can make a remarkable difference in the readability and usability of information and knowledge. The planning, production and marketing of a site should be approached with insight and imagination from its inception. My thesis (www.silvery.pe.kr) is a creative and innovative attempt to demonstrate an exemplary model of the planned book design for teaching internet fundamentals to the senior citizens who never used or never knew how to use computer. My objects in the thesis are to teach internet and digital computer skills in a short time span and in the easiest way possible, avoiding expansive and excessive graphic design techniques that might distract seniors’ concentration. My main goal and achievement in the thesis is to aid senior citizens in the steady and progressive acquirement of basic skills and adaptability. In order to promote the learning process and progress the writer emphasized simplicity in the web site creation based on Minimalism and the support of other art \r\ntheories. Even in the web site masters’ works this simplifying tendency dominates over the decorative elements. Hillman Curtis’ works and are mainly in the Minimalist style because he realized the importance of his creativity and objective over the decoration and technique. His approach indirectly inspired this writer in her web site planned book design. Suggested by the Hillman Curtis' above mentioned works, this writer simplified the design into four basic divisions in the self page. My thesis ideas were suggested by other web masters such as Joshua Davis. As Davis confessed that his creative ideas were partly inspired by the abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollack, I myself appropriated the Korean painter Kim Heung Soo’s Harmonism in and . As in Kim’s Harmonism works, the visible concrete world is expressed in contrast with the invisible abstract world. \r\nFor my silver web site, I contrasted the symbolic icons on one side with the functional icons of computers on another side so as to repeatedly stimulate the memory of the senior learners. Thus, I maximized the learning and memorizing effects. I further created the flash work . For the titles of the simultaneous images, based on this design theory, I created appropriate flash in the use of screen and of internet.\r\nIn addition, I created the index and content pages by using such icons as ‘scroll bar’,’sand clock’, and ‘enter’. I used these icons frequently so that the learners stimulate and quicken their memories and remember and retain what they have already learned. I followed here the principles of Minimalism and gave formal unity to my work. I also explored stylistic variety by learning from maximum simplicity in Daniel Janet’s Works like .\r\nIn the process of creating my own design book (my thesis) I learned from Bart Marble new techniques through the three fundamental elements: layered content, multiple points of entry, and connecting story lines.\r\nIn the writing my thesis and my designed web site book I kept in mind the famous advice of Frank Stella “Art excludes the Unnecessary” because senior citizens find it difficult to overcome complexity. For the arrangement of my banner Donald Jude’s work gave some hints but I got a definite idea from the concrete examples of stone benches in the World Cup Garden in Sangam Dong in Seoul.\r\nFor my Silver Web Site I was impressed by the minimalist use of the two strong contrasting colors, namely the color of letters and of the background color of Barbara Kruger’s work < I shop therefore I am>.\r\nIn conclusion I have attempted a planned web site and designed book, employing new ideas and modern techniques never used in any Korean planned web site and designed book. I have succeeded in achieving my goals I set for my thesis. In concluding I am very grateful for my thesis advisers.
