Translucent Manual: as a tracing layer for instant guide로서, 기름 종이와 같이 투명한 매뉴얼 레이어가 실제 디바이스의 사용 환경 위에 함께 존재하는 것이 핵심이다.

Major in Visual Communication Design The Graduate School of Communication and Arts Yonsei University Thesis Supervisor: Hyoshin Park Since February, 2011, the number of smartphone users had exceeded 18% of all subscribers of mobile phones. The number reaches up to ten million according to a paper released by the Korea Communications Commission in March, 2011. The growth of popularity of smartphones can be said to be tremendous, considering that at the end of last year the number of smartphone users were 800,000 which is only 1.7% of all the subscribers of mobile phones. Such smartphone craze had played a huge role in the development and spread of other smart devices like smart-book and smart-TV. As the smart devices had spread all over our society, the lack of effective manuals became a new problem especially for the users who don’t have experiences for using smart devices. Most of the device interface already has the interface of high-quality reference but some of the new users of the smart devices would need some manuals to refer to. The fact that there are already many kinds of guidebooks Heesun Kim for the smart gadgets reflects such demands. Thus, this study suggests a new concept of manual that can enable new users of mobile smart devices to easily get accustomed to their usage.\r\nThe starting point for the research was to give a clear definition of “smart” which is mixed up with various ideas. Approaching the concept of “smart” in the perspective of art, history, near-future studies, and corporations, this research had driven out four distinct characteristics that “smart” should have. First, a “smart” device should be connected to networks. Second, it should be optimized according to a given context. Third, it should be personalized according to the user. Fourth, it should have pervasiveness. Especially the fourth characteristic, “pervasiveness” is the ultimate element that “smart” should have and is the direction where the concept should develop forward. Besides these four, this study also found out a peculiar aspect of the users of “smart” devices. They pursue faster speed and want to have an instant solution for their problems, since the development of technologies has given their emotional trigger.\r\nBased on the above facts, this research had studied for a manual that can increase usefulness by accommodating usability and affect of users. The theoretical basis to increase the usability is to adopt Minimal Manual Design which was initiated during 1980s and 1990s. For the affect aspect, this research had applied Analog Design. Minimal Manual mainly deals with tasks and aims at how to perform tasks without errors, also each page of Minimal Manual has modularity. Analog Design applies method or medium used in the past to the design. This lowers emotional barriers that users can feel on the manual and thereby can make them feel friendly to it.\r\nThis study proposes four essential elements that a user manual design should have based on the above study on mobile smart devices, users of those devices, and several theories related to manual design. Those four essential elements are mobility, instantaneity, interactivity, and friendliness. The final user manual design concept is Translucent Manual: as a tracing layer for instant guide. This transparent manual layer looks like a tracing-paper which can be used directly on the surface of actual device. Since the actual device and manual can be seen together, users can get a direct help from manual and do their tasks immediately. Also, the design is made up with tracing-paper which is familiar medium, users would feel comfortable and feel no aversion to it.\r\nIn this study, I tried to find a way to make a user manual design which fit into the characteristics of users and smart devices as well as enhance practicality of the manual itself. The suggested manual design at the end of this research mainly targets mobile smart devices but those four essential elements -mobility, instantaneity, interactivity and friendliness- will provide a guideline that can be used in any other manual designs for all sorts of smart devices.
