Among smartphone applications, photos are a service used bythe second largest numberof users after games. Accordingly, cloud services intended to overcome hardware constraints, including social networking services (SNS) and photo editing services, are in active operation in order to satisfy users’ social desires. On the other hand, services provided toenable you to search for and manage photos on smartphones don’t satisfy users’ social desires yet inthe actual circumstances. Although photo metadata may be useful information for retrieval, it is notactually used for information classification or retrieval except for timesand places. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to deduce a suitable context-based interface environment from utilizing content-based retrieval and metadata for image searches in such a way as toensure that they suit user characteristics. \r\n \r\nBecause of the necessity of clearly setting up an information classification and an information structure first in searching for a large quantity of photos, suitable elements for theimage search interface were discovered through literature surveys in terms of information design. The context elements suitable for smartphone photo application services can be classified into the following three types: The physical context was ascertained to be used as metadata in terms of information classification and information structuring. The emotional context influenced the photo content. The activity context is an element that influences taking photos and searching for photos. Moreover, technical possibilities were ascertained by reviewing cases of engineering researchon image clustering and retrieval techniques. \r\n \r\nIn order to achieve interface materialization of smartphone photo applications, this study analyzed the types and characteristics of layouts, navigation systems, tools and retrievals highly associated with photo searches, and accordingly italso analyzed currently available photo applications. As a result, it was found that navigation systems and tools were being provided by relying on information classification concerning times and places, thus failing to provide any search environment that would satisfy real users. \r\n \r\nIn order to extract user needs and service goals, onlines urveys and user interviews were conducted. As a result, it could be seen that in addition to emotional reasons, users had big functional reasons for taking notes with respect to the purpose of taking photographs. Moreover, users found it uncomfortable to manage their photos by creating folders themselves or leave writings such as tags. Therefore photo applications need tobe personalized and automated. User needs and function requirements could be defined through primary personas’ journey maps. The users wanted to see the photos of each group of friends they met. They wanted to arrange their photos in order to solve the problem of insufficient storage available for saving photos, but they had so many photos that they thought it difficult to even find the photos it would be okay to delete. Moreover, they wanted their personal photos and the photos intended for business purposes to be separated from each other when they are saved. A solution to this is to createan information classification through automated tagging by analyzing the photocontent and gathering and deleting the poor-quality photos together at a time. The function implementation provides acontextual menu for searching for photos highly associated with the photo theuser is currently viewing. Inthe past the user had to scroll through thousands of photos in order to find aphoto he wants to view, but now if the user wants to find people in a photo heis viewing, he can find them in any other photos immediately by running the contextual menu, thus it can get rid of the fatigue of searching for photos and increase access to the photos the user wants to find. \r\n \r\nThrough this study, a useful context-based interface for searching for a large quantity of information on a small screen could be presented, and besides research on the interface aspect, it is expected that research onthe field of interaction will also continue.
