The objective of this study is twofold: first, to critically map social book curation concept to date, particularly for the Korean publishing industry; and second, to explore interactive social curation interface utilising the qualities and attributes of serendipity. Research has shown that serendipity is an important concept not only in the context of user experience theoretically but also as a practical tool to enhance users’ experience with interactivity. Thus as an alternative to search algorithms, it leads to ‘unplanned, fortunate discovery’ of new books. Building on existing work on social curation, this study aims to determine how serendipity can be identified and be used to improve the curation process in the online platform environment.

Based on a review of the literature on curation and theories of social curation, case study focusing on Korean book curation services was carried out before implementing user research. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 9 participants, which analysed serendipity into four types of design attributes: connectivity, contextuality, discoverability, and enjoyment. On this basis, social book curation service ‘oglee’ and its interface were designed, tested and in turn developed to demonstrate serendipitous book discovery experience. The results indicate that serendipity acts as a key factor in designing meaningful experiences to users and further the entire curation process of acquiring, organising and sharing contents. Social book curation illuminates the relationship between people and interactive systems; it motivates users to contribute as active curators; to ‘browse’ rather than ‘search’ for the serendipitous experience.

The findings of this study will redound to the benefit of the publishing industry in Korea and UX researchers considering that serendipity plays an important role in user experience and book curation today. Thus, it can contribute to discussing strategies for the cultural and economic sustainability of publishing culture. For future studies, the study can help understand and utilise the concept of serendipity in various curatorial processes that many researchers were not able to explore.
