Now that we are biased towards symbolic visualizations, such as icons or emoticons, we must recognize the limitations of how we visualize emotions. Therefore, this paper aims to study the potential of utilizing theories on the visualization of emotions by newly classifying visualization types for emotions, establishing a theory for the interactions between each type, and applying said theory to visual works.
To meet this purpose, I examined the visual tendencies of emotion in four aspects: linguistic, formative, general, and empirical. In terms of the linguistic aspects, I examined the visual tendencies of Ekman's six basic emotions?joy, sadness, surprise, fear, anger, and disgust?by using sample sentences from the Korean dictionary. In terms of the formative aspects, the emotional characteristics of basic formative elements were examined through previous studies and literature research. In terms of the general aspects, the trend of representative images retrieved about basic emotions was examined using online media. Finally, in terms of the empirical aspects, I conducted and analyzed experiments whereby 36 study participants were asked to draw the form of each emotion.
Based on the visual tendencies of emotions identified in these four aspects, each emotion’s representative forms and directions were summarized. Joy can be summarized as mainly a circle or curve spreading in all directions; sadness is represented as a repetitive form of descending vertical lines; surprise is a pointed sea urchin form spreading in all directions; fear is a zigzag line represented in a vertical direction; anger is in the form of a sharp half-sea urchin with an explosive and soaring directionality; and disgust is a clustered form of small spiral objects.
Regarding the general and empirical aspects, the emotions' visualization types were divided into form-excluded visualization, form-associative visualization, and form-representative visualization. These categorizations are based on form properties, which are determined by the images of emotions commonly used by people as well as the forms of emotions collected from study participants’ experiences. Form-excluded visualization is a type of abstract representation that excludes specific forms of an emotion’s image. In form-associative visualization, an emotion is associated with a figurative form, such as specific objects or situations related to the emotional image. Finally, form-representative visualization is a type of visualization that replaces emotions with representative forms for each emotion that individuals have learned socially and culturally. In addition to these three types, study participants also tended to visualize people's physical responses to emotions.
Next, I presented three forms of interaction between basic emotions’ visualization types: 'coexistence', 'transition', and 'mediation'. Thus, the theory of extensibility regarding the visualization of emotions was established?such as 'expansion of visual clarity', 'extension of visualization method', and 'extension of visualization elements'?for visual communication. Moreover, I examined the theory’s usefulness by producing motion graphics of the Korean alphabet 'Hangeul' concrete poetry applying the theory and the visual language of basic emotions.
In short, this study significantly expands the scope of the application of visual language to express emotions by attempting to visualize emotions in ways beyond symbolic methods, such as emoticons, which tend to cause intercultural and intergenerational problems. The study also presents a form of interaction between types through a new classification of visualization types for emotions.
