The use of chatbots has recently increased as a way to conduct user studies. Chatbots feature several advantages, such as the ability to conduct simultaneous research on multiple users and being less dependent on physical time and place for both participants and researchers. In this study, we designed a chatbot-based interactive visualization tool called JourneyBot, which collects users’ experiences in clinic visits and visualizes their journey on an interactive and customizable interface. The research process consisted of two stages. First, we designed a rule-based chatbot to collect candid comments from users in various stages of their visits to the doctor’s office. After this, JourneyBot generated a visualized map of individual users’ treatment experiences. Second, we created an interactive journey map combining all user journeys to enable designers to quickly identify the pain points and emotional changes users feel while visiting medical clinics. The study’s results demonstrate that JourneyBot can facilitate timely and appropriate research methods and that it has the potential to become a useful research tool for designers.
