Conflicts always occur between self and the other. All those monstrous creatures that have accompanied us from the primitive age until today reveal our hostile attitude toward otherness. Since men could think metaphysically, they have been constantly trying to explain to themselves the mysteries surrounding them. The answer seemed to lie in the law of nature, in absolute divinity, or in rational sciences. Although rational thinking can clarify many things, it cannot completely get rid of deeply-rooted fears in us. “The Strange” have been named diversely throughout ages, but what hasn’t changed throughout time is the repulsion against otherness. This repulsion will always find a new way for its relief. The motif of the Doppelgaenger(or double) appears frequently in 18th century literature as an embodiment of an internal/mental confusion. It was in the realms of literature, where the concept of the double was established as an aesthetic motif and became the ultimate symbol of identity crisis as well as painful self-recognition. In romantic literature, gothic novels and early cinema, the double was given monstrous features, which can be interpreted as a reaction to the then new studies of psychoanalysis and its disclosure of the uncanny ‘other’ in ourselves, the Unconscious. At the turn of the 19th century, the attempts to place “the strange other” inside oneself and the overall stream that replaced mysticism with the rationality of sciences also changed the vision of the monster. Repulsion was no longer aroused by the monster but rather applied by man. With this new insight, the Otherness symbolized by the monster became redefined. Once the origin of the monster was relocated from outside to inside, monstrous Doppelgangers entered the stage. The strange case of Dr.Jekyll, published in the late 19th century, tells the story of the other self aroused from the Unconscious that slowly overtakes the place of the subjective, conscious self. Mr.Hyde, the other self of Jekyll, has become a synonym for the monstrous double created by a disrupted mind. This thesis is a study about the aesthetic use of the Doppelgaenger motif and the effective method of its visualization by the film media. The main subject of the investigation is the German expressionist cinema of the beginning of the 20th century, and particularly the appearance of the Doppelgaenger motif through the relationship between the femaleand the monster, both being “the alienated others” in patriarchal western society. German expressionist films often show stereotypic Doppelgaenger motifs such as those in ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ or ‘Faust and Mephistopheles’. However, others that do not show the Doppelgaenger directly also have a tendency of employing its motif through their special way of story telling, the mise-en-scene, and the overall ambiguousness that is characteristic of the expressionist films. This thesis tries to examine the unique aesthetics of the expressionist cinema, known for its ‘excellent visualization of the human mind’. In order to do that, I will focus on the Doppelgaenger motif indicated by film devices such as mise-en-scene or cutting, rather than the obvious motif that is directly told through the narrative.《Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror》(1922) by F.W.Murnau is a good example, in which a well-known motif of the ultimate other, namely Dracula, is being presented as a monster from within, of visualizing the image of a terrifying double through expressionism in film. The key to the interpretation of the vampire as a double is the mutual relation between the monster and the female character. Hence, in order to understand the mechanism that combines femininity and monster within a Doppelgaenger motif, I will examine the Otherness of these three in psychoanalytic terms of ‘the return of the Repressed’. The previously stated contents are treated in chapter three and four of this thesis. Chapter two, which is the beginning of the body, will deal with the historical background of the Doppelgaenger motif as an aesthetic symbol for ‘the stranger within oneself’. This chapter also contains the historical, sociological and psychoanalytical meanings of the monster in the western world. In other words, the contextual western concept, that made them understand the monster, first as the embodiment of hateful Otherness, and now as a surface screen onto which one projects the estranged parts of the self. As an example of such a mental projection, I will examine how the vampire motif functions as a materialization of all that has been condemned and rejected as evil by the patriarchal western society.
