만화, 멜랑콜리, 허니와 클로버, 미장센, 웹툰, 세로 연출, 재매개
이미지 언어와 문자 언어의 융합을 통한 독특한 시각 커뮤니케이션 체계를 지닌 만화는 한정된 지면 안에 다양한 시공간을 압축해 표현하고 그 압축된 사이에 독자의 적극적인 참여를 필요로 하는 등 대중의 시대, 전자시대 들어서며 이에 적절한 매체로 부상하고 있다. 그간 만화와 관련한 연구들은 만화의 본질적 측면보다 그 활용성에 주목해 왔으며 커뮤니케이션 매체로서 만화에 접근하더라도 의사소통의 기능에 집중한 채 감성적 측면은 간과되어 왔다. 본 논문은 간과되어온 그 측면에 초점을 맞추며 수많은 감정 중에서도 ‘멜랑콜리’에 집중하고자 한다.\r\n\r\n멜랑콜리는 서양철학의 원류가 되는 감정으로 죽음을 타고난 인간이라면 누구나 피할 수 없는 본래성이다. 본 논문에서는 가장 대중적인 매체 중 하나인 만화에서 가장 근원적인 감정인 멜랑콜리를 표현하기 위해 어떤 연출이 이루어지고 있는지 출판만화 『허니와 클로버』를 중심으로 연구하고 나아가 매체환경 변화에 따라 인터넷만화에서 어떠한 새로운 연출이 나타나고 있는지도 함께 살펴보고자 한다.\r\n\r\n만화의 미장센은 캐릭터부터 시작해서 사물, 공간(배경)의 선택 및 조명, 텍스트(말풍선) 등의 위치와 크기, 배열, 구도를 결정하는 총괄적인 연출로 어떻게 연출하느냐, 즉 각각의 요소를 어떻게 배치하느냐에 따라 전하고자 하는 분위기와 공간의 느낌, 나아가 독자의 시선을 결정하게 되며 그것이 곧 감정전달에 영향을 미치게 된다. 본 논문에서는 그 중에서도 만화를 구성하는 가장 주요한 두 요소인 ‘말풍선’과 ‘칸’을 중심으로 그 형태와 배경색, 배치와 연결방식 등을 분석함으로써 멜랑콜리 연출이 어떠한 양상으로 나타나는지 살펴보았다. 모호하고 이율배반적인 특성을 지닌 멜랑콜리를 표현하기 위해 필연적으로 동반되는 것이 중층적 연출이다. 복잡한 내면 묘사를 위해선 각각의 요소들이 단순하게 배열되는 것에서 그치지 않고 끊임없이 몇 겹의 중첩과 분할을 반복하며, 하나의 페이지에 다양한 차원을 공존시키고, 단순히 아름다움을 위해서가 아닌 독자의 감성을 자극할 목적으로 유미적인 연출이 이루어진다.\r\n\r\n만화는 디지털이라는 도구와 인터넷이라는 지면을 만나면서 그에 걸맞게 변모하고 있다. 초창기 인터넷만화는 작가의 일상을 담은 짧은 1～4칸 형식의 만화가 대부분이었으나 차츰 장편서사가 시도되기 시작하면서 인터넷만화 고유의 연출법이 나타난다. 그 중 가장 눈에 띄는 것이 바로 웹툰의 스크롤을 활용한 세로 연출이다. 웹툰은 무한히 이어지는 세로 공간을 활용해 감정을 지속적으로 전달하며 모든 칸을 동시에 보여주는 것이 아닌 스크롤에 따라 서서히 화면이 나타나는 효과를 활용해 지속되고, 깊어져가는 멜랑콜리를 표현해내고 있다.\r\n\r\n출판만화가 인터넷이라는 공간을 만나 변모했듯이 인터넷만화 역시 여전히 진화하고 있는 중이다. 미디어의 하드웨어적 변화가 급속히 이루어지는데 비해 그에 걸맞은 만화를 창작하려는 시도는 아직 극히 미미하지만 이 충돌점에서도 역시 새로운 연출방법을 기대해볼 수 있겠다. 하지만 재매개 과정에 있어 내용이 없는 형식이 되는 것만은 경계해야 할 것이며 만화가 단순한 오락물이 아닌 멜랑콜리라는 실존적 정서를 담아내는 깊이가 어디에서 비롯하는지, 그 연출에 대한 깊이있는 이해가 선행되어야 할 것이다.
By combining the image language and text language, ‘Manhwa’ has created a unique graphic communication system. ‘Manhwa’ condenses and expresses various space time through limited paper space, and reader is required to become an active role in understanding the condensed expression. These characteristics of ‘Manhwa’ have put itself in a position as an appropriate media in a time of general public and internet. The many researches on‘Manhwa’ have emphasized on its application rather than its essential side. Even the researches focused on communicative qualities of ‘Manhwa’, they failed to demonstrate the emotional effects that ‘Manhwa’ delivers. Therefore, this study focuses on the emotional effects, and specializes in techniques‘Manhwa’ use to express ‘melancholy’, one of the many emotions people feel.\r\n‘Melancholy’ is an emotion that has become an essence to western philosophy, and mortal human cannot avoid. The used techniques to express ‘melancholy’ was researched based on 『Honey and Clover』 that is one of the popular published manga. Furthermore, the new techniques for the internet comics according to the change of media were surveyed, too.\r\nMise-en-scene of ‘Manhwa’ starts from placing characters, objects, spaces and texts(speech balloon) in a paper space. The size, sequences, composition and total arrangement of such elements will create an atmosphere, and as readers follow those visual elements, they will likely to fall under the emotion the writer intended to deliver. This paper focuses especially on speech balloon and composition, and the effects of the size, color, shape of them on expressing ‘melancholy’ was analyzed. ‘Melancholy’ has ambiguous and antinomic natures, and a multi layered technique is essential to express it. To portray complicated inner emotions, beyond simply arranging the elements, elements are piled, divided repetitiously and co-placed in various levels. These techniques are used to simulate the reader’s emotion and not just for aesthetics of the graphics.\r\n‘Manhwa’ is evolving with wide use of digital tools and internet space. Early internet comics mostly consisted of short one～four square frames, but lately new technical attempts are made to elongate the story. One of the attempts that stands out is the scrolling of ‘Webtoon’. ‘Webtoon’ uses vertically limitless web space, and continuously delivers an emotion, not at once, but through vertical scrolling. The images dispose themselves gradually, and the feeling of gradual ‘melancholy’ is well delivered to the readers.\r\n‘Webtoon’ is still in progress of change as the published ‘Manhwa’ evolved with internet. Considering the change of media happened in such a short time, the attempts to create ‘Manhwa’ suitable for transformed media are yet insignificant, but new techniques are expectable. However, formalities without contents should be avoided in process of remediation, and study on the way how ‘Manhwa’ delivers the deep human emotions such as ‘melancholy’ should be preceded.141)
