예술과 과학의 융합이라는 화두는 동 시대의 유행이나 트랜드가 아닌 예술의 시대성을 반영한 필연적 요구이자, 예술가의 창작 본능에 따라 생겨난 자연발생적 욕구에서 기인한다. 창작자의 예술적 상상력과 현대과학기술이 지닌 잠재적 표현 가능성의 결합은 과학기술의 미적 변용이면서 예술의 무한한 표현 가능성을 암시하고 있다. 또한, 새로운 예술표현에 대한 예술가들의 열망과 기대는 과학기술의 급속한 유입과 맞물려 특정 예술장르에 국한되지 않고, 다양한 경계를 넘나들면서 거의 모든 예술분야에 걸쳐 고르게 확산되고 있다.\r\n\r\n본 논문은 공연예술과 과학기술이 만나는 영역 중 현대 공연예술에 나타나는 영상 매체의 미학적 수용과 표현에 관한 연구이다. 영상매체를 공연의 주요한 표현수단으로 활용한 요셉 스보보다(Josef Svoboda)는 시노그라피(scenography) 개념을 통해 전통적 무대표현 방식과의 결합하여 새로운 형태의 무대시스템을 구현하였다. 그의 시노그라피 개념은 현대 공연예술에 많은 영향을 주었으며, 영상매체의 활용으로 새로운 무대언어의 가능성을 제시하였다. 또한, 드라마, 배우, 음악, 무대, 조명 등 그 밖의 공연표현요소와의 결합을 통해 내적 커뮤니케이션의 미적기능이 발생하여 관객과의 외적 커뮤니케이션으로 전이될 수 있도록 하였고, 영상매체가 지닌 공간의 확장성, 의미의 확장성, 시각적 환상성 등을 통해 무대 시공간을 확장하는 실제적 도구이자, 공연예술가들의 상상력을 구현하는 표현의 도구가 되었다고 주장한다.
The issue of the “fusion of art and science” is an essential requirement that reflects the characteristics of the times for the arts and not the trend or fashion of the time. It originates from the spontaneous desire that is generated by the creative instinct of artists. Combining the artistic imagination of artists with the expression possibility of modern science technology is an aesthetic conversion of science technology and it implies an infinite possibility for expression in the arts. Also, combining the rapid influx of science technology, the aspiration and expectation of artists for new artistic expression has been widely disseminated through all fields of the arts, crossing diverse boundaries and not restricted to a specific artistic genre. This study is an esthetic acceptance and expression of image media shown in modern performing arts among the areas where performance art and science technology meet. Josef Svoboda who utilized image media as a major expression tool for performance embodied a new form of a stage system by combining traditional stage expression methods through the concept of scenography. His concept of scenography had much influence on modern performance art and suggested the possibility of a new stage language by utilizing the image media. He tried to transfer this esthetic function of internal communication to external communication with audiences through combining other performance expression elements such as drama, actors, music, stage and lighting. He also insists that scenography is a substantial tool for expanding time and space of the stage through the expansion of space, expansion of meaning, and visual conversion that the image media possess and a tool of expression that embodies the imagination of performance artists.
