사운드 아트, 사운드 조각, 사운드 인스톨레이션, 사운드 스케이프 아트, 사운드 퍼포먼스 아트, 노이즈, 음악
현대예술 혹은 시각예술 안에 자리 잡아온 사운드 아트(sound art)는 지금까지 ‘모호하고 분류가 어려운 장르’로 인식되어왔다. 이러한 인식과 함께 사운드 아트의 세부장르들은 의미가 다른 용어가 같은 뜻으로 혼용되거나 분명하지 않거나 애매하게 분석되어 사용되고 있다. 본 논문은 사운드아트를 기존 시각예술 장르의 연장선상으로 봄으로써 현재까지 진행된 사운드 아트의 작품들을 기존 장르의 연관성을 기준으로 사운드 아트의 세부 장르를 나누어 정리하여본다. 본 연구가 시도하는 세부 장르의 분석과 나눔은 첫째, 다른 장르와의 모호한 관계를 분석 정리하고, 둘째, 사운드 아트 내에서 세부 장르를 나누어 분석하여 사운드 아트 장르 내의 혼란을 정리하고 셋째, 장르를 세부 장르 분류한 사례를 토대로 향후 좀 더 창의적이고 새로운 결합의 작업을 도모하기 위함이다. 본 논문에서는 2장에서 사운드 아트의 정의와 사운드 아트의 사운드를 다루며, 3장에서 사운드 아트의 역사를 19세기부터 20세기 초반까지 다룬다. 4장에서 사운드 아트의 세부 장르를 사운드 조각(sound sculpture), 사운드 인스톨레이션(sound installation), 사운드 스케이프 아트(sound scape art), 사운드 퍼포먼스 아트(sound performance art)로 나누어 분석하고, 각 세부장르의 특성이 중복되거나 시간이 흐름으로 작품의 특성이 변형되어 세부장르로 분류가 어려운 작업을 복합장르 사운드 아트(intermix sound art)로 분류하여 분석하도록 한다. 먼저 각 세부 장르와 기존 장르와의 차이점을 분석하여 각 사운드 아트의 세부장르의 정의에 대하여 분석한 후, 사례와 함께 특성을 분석한다. 사운드 조각은 소리를 시·공감각적으로 구성하고, 소리를 조각하는 특성을 가지고 있다. 이러한 특성으로 사운드 조각은 관념에서 벗어난 악기의 형태를 취하기도 한다. 사운드 조각의 움직임은 소리를 내기 위한 움직임과, 소리의 움직임을 표현하기 위한 소리의 운동 자체이다. 사운드 인스톨레이션은 첫 번째로, 직관적으로 시각적이기 보다 청각적 작용으로 시각화를 일으키고, 두 번째로 소리로서 공간을 창출해 낸다. 세 번째로 사운드를 사용하여 현장에 규제되지 않는 장소 특성적 공간을 창출하고 체험하게 한다. 사운드 스케이프 아트는 첫 번째로, 바람이나 파도 등 환경 등에 의해 연주되는 특성으로, 해당 지역의 사운드 스케이프의 특성에 맞게 설계되고, 다른 세부 장르에 비해 거대한 건축적 규모를 가지고 있다. 두 번째로 사운드 스케이프 아트는 환경 그 자체를 배경이자 재료로 환경과 환경 음을 사용하여 작품이 완성된다. 작품이 내는 사운드가 영향을 끼치는 범위가 넓어 사운드 스케이프 아트의 사운드는 해당 주변 지역의 표식음이 되고, 작품이 내는 사운드로 규정되는 공간의 범위가 사운드 스케이프의 범위에 해당한다. 마지막으로 사운드 스케이프 아트의 건축적이고 거대한 외관과 환경에 조화되는 소리로 인해 시각적 부분과 청각적인 부분 모두 랜드 마크의 역할을 하기도 한다. 사운드 퍼포먼스 아트는 첫 번째로 사운드를 이용한 퍼포먼스를 말하되, 퍼포먼스 아트의 일회성과 즉흥성, 규율 파괴적인 성향을 모두 지니고 있고, 이 모든 성향이 극대화된 장르라 할 수 있다. 왜냐하면 사운드 퍼포먼스 아트는 정확히 같은 음과 동작이 다시 실현되는 것이 불가능하기 때문이다. 두 번째로 사운드 퍼포먼스 아트는 동작 등의 행동의 의미보다 행위로 인한 사운드의 창조가 주된 목적이다. 마지막으로 복합 사운드 아트 장르는, 첫 번째로 위에서 언급한 세부 장르적 특성 중 두 가지 이상의 세부 장르 특성을 가져 구분이 뚜렷하게 인식되기 어려운 작품을 대상으로 한다. 두 번째로 사운드가 가지고 있는 시간이라는 성격에 의해 각 세부 장르의 성격을 부분적으로 가지고 있거나, 시간의 흐름에 따라 한 세부 장르에서 다른 세부 장르의 특성으로 변화하여 한 장르로 규정짓기 어려운 작품을 대상으로 복합장르 사운드 아트로 구분한다. 본 논문에서 시도한 분류와 분석은 연구자가 다양한 자료를 찾고 이를 토대로 나름의 장르구분과 분석을 시도하고 정리한 결과이다. 사운드 아트는 앞으로 점점 더 작품 수가 늘어남과 동시에 작품들의 사운드에 대한 더 새로운 접근으로 인하여 본 논문에서 시도한 네 가지의 분류를 기준으로 확장된 좀 더 섬세한 세부 분류가 필요할 수도 있을 것이다. 본 논문은 향후 보다 세밀한 작품 분석에 도움이 되는 기초연구가 될 수 있다는 의의를 가질 수 있을 것이다.
Since the emergence of the Sound Art, it has been considered as part of the modern art and the visual art. It’s generally conceived that it’s confusing and difficult to classify sound art’s sub-genres. It’s often the case that sound art’s sub genres are not identified and analyzed correctly. In this article, the sound art is viewed as the extension from the visual art genre and we divide subgenres of the sound art by its relation to conventional genres. \r\nThe reason for doing the analysis of the subgenres of the sound is, first, to solidify obfuscate relationship with other genres and second, it’s to classify subgenres of the sound art and this eliminates any confusion about the sound art genres and lastly, it’s to encourage more creative work that combines various subgenres based on the classification of subgenres that this research provides.\r\nIn chapter 2 of this article, gives the definition of Sound art and describes what sound is in the Sound Art and in chapter 3, the history of sound art from the 19th century to the early 20th century is provided. In chapter 4, sound art’s sub genres, sound sculpture, sound installation, sound scape art and sound performance art, are analyzed. Sound art is classified as an intermix sound art when it is identified with multiple of subgenres or when the work becomes transformed by the change in time. By analyzing difference between each of the sub genres and existing genre, we can define each of the sub genres and by analyzing the exemplary work, we learn about its characteristics. Sound in Sound sculpture is composed and sculpted visually and synesthetically. This characteristic shows that Sound Art not only exists in concept but it also exists as an instrument. Movements in the Sound Sculpture are motion of the sound itself that make sound and express movements.\r\nFirst, in Sound installation, auditory effect, rather than visual effect, causes visualization, and second, sound creates the notion of space. Third, by using sound, you can create and experience characteristic space that is not limited by the current location. Soundscape Art is, first, performed by the environment such as wind and wave and is designed with consideration to the characteristic of the area’s sound scape. Sound sculptures tend to be architecturally bigger than any other works from different subgenres. Second, Soundscape art uses the environment as the background material and the work is completed by making use of the environment and environment sound. The Soundscape art work makes impact over large area and its sound becomes the sound mark for the area and sound produced by the work defines the limits of soundscape’s spatial range. Lastly, Soundscape arts architecture, big exterior and sound that blends in with the environment, all together serves as the landmark, visually and aurally.\r\nSound performance art, first, can simply be defined as a performance that uses sound but it must be improvised on site, without rule and played only once and all these tendencies are quite extreme in this genre. The reason is because, first of all, in Sound Performance Art, one cannot repeat the same sound and motions. And second of all, the purpose of doing Sound Performance Art is to create sound rather than expressing a message with motion that conveys meaning.\r\nIntermix sound art genre, first, combines more than two different subgenres and it is difficult to define it as single subgenre. Second, it is regarded as intermix sound art genre when the work shows partial characteristics from number of different subgenres with regards to change in time. and it’s difficult to define it under one subgenre. \r\nThis research provides analysis and updated classification of genres and it is done by researching large number of scholarly articles. There will be much more work done in Sound art and the classification of sound art, the four subgenres this research defines, will prove to be useful. This research will serve as the basic research for doing detailed analysis of artwork.
