Participatory performance art refers to performance works of art that are created through participatory behaviors of the audience. And the video work of participatory performance which is the topic of this thesis refers to all the video documentaries or video art works. The purpose of this study is to research on the video works of contemporary participatory performances with a focus on video and internet media in their participatory art practices. This thesis focuses on the video work's relationship with the participatory performance and asks whether the video should be treated as a mere document of the participatory performance or as a separate video art. If we look at the participatory performance art from the performance art perspective of view, all the video works created from the performance will be regarded merely as documentary materials of the performance. However, if we look at the video works from the video art perspective of view, not only participatory performance itself but also its video works will then be able to be discussed together as parts of the process of art and its results. As said, this research for my thesis originated from the author's agony of whether participatory performance and its video works should be regarded as a one continuous and consolidatory behaviors of art or as two separate behaviors of art.\r\n\r\n In an effort to find a possible basis that the video work of the participatory performance art can be discussed as an independent video art, I took note that it is a research on medium-specificity of the video because I thought that the intention of the research done on a medium called video in the early video arts could also be discovered in the very video works of participatory performance art. Consequently, the thesis tried to conduct a comparative analysis of the early video art and the then performance art in order to see how they influenced the relationship between today's participatory performance art and its video works. Based on the said preceding research, this thesis conducted a case study not only on video performance works that seem to be the video works of today's participatory performance art, but also on the participatory performance art and its video works done on the internet. Through this case study, this thesis analyses the process of the participatory performance, participation channel, and video works that have been changed now, and to see whether or not today's video works could be distinguished from participatory performance based on the medium specificity. This effort was intended to see how the video works of participatory performances have been changed while going through the media and internet ages, and to find the directionality of how to define the video works of participatory performance as an art.\r\n As a result of the discussion, since the types of participatory performance and its video works have been varying and continuously changing, I came to believe that they had better be analysed in rather expanded context than within the past frame. It led the thesis to conclude that participatory performance and its video works can not be separated, but the two together should be regarded as one type of consolidatory art or sometimes as an art methodology. Incidentally, this study is thought to be able to find its significance in that it looked into how video works of today's participatory performance and the perception of the media involved in the utilization of the video works are connected to the past and how they are being expanded and improved again with today's newly appeared media like internet, smart phone, social media, etc.
