A Study about Self-Reflexivity of Artistic Game: Focusing on Game of Self-reflexivity through the Depaysement’s Techniques \r\n\r\nThis study started with a question self-reflexivity games could provide aesthetic experience like when appreciate artworks. This paper intends to discuss that the self-reflexivity experience if the game player can be similar to the one of the spectator of artworks. For this purpose, I research self-reflexivity as an art experience by looking at Laurie Taylor’s paper and Rosald Krauss’ paper: Laurie Taylor explains the game player’s self-reflexivity experience through Lacan’s Mirror Stage. In the case of Rosalind Krauss’ paper, she contrasts the difference between reflexiveness and auto-reflection in the artwork experience. In addition, I approach the effect and value of self-reflective experience in game by looking at the words of Gonzalo Fraska, who mentions the necessity and possibility of game design on the basis of Augusto Boal’s concept of ‘spect-actor’ and Brecht’s defamiliarization effect. In this regard, this paper deals with ‘Simulation Gap’ presented by Ian Bogost in order to emphasize player’s subjectivity provided by game play. Also, I look for a connection between self0reflexivity in surrealism and some types of games. Accordingly, I examine the correlation between Rene Margritte’s Depaysement techniques in surrealism and the self-reflexivities in his work. Based on this theoretical background, I look at three mechanisms in games with depaysement techniques which create self-reflective experiences for players: ‘contradistinctive experiences’, ‘simulations’, and ‘a gap resulting from repetitive mechanisms’. By using these mechanisms, this paper analyzes two games, , and , which are currently evaluated as artistic games. Consequently, I conclude that self-reflexive games can offer opportunities for players to reflect to themselves during game play or by game design and this can be the method of expanding game design perspectives more aesthetic ways.
